Devastating Nepal quake kills over 1,000, some in Everest avalanche
By Gopal Sharma and Ross Adkin

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - A powerful earthquake struck Nepal and sent tremors through northern India on Saturday, killing more than 1,000 people, toppling a 19th-century tower in the capital Kathmandu and touching off a deadly avalanche on Mount Everest.

There were reports of devastation in outlying, isolated mountainous areas after the midday quake of magnitude 7.9, Nepal's worst in 81 years, centered 50 miles (80 km) east of the second city, Pokhara.

As fears grew of a humanitarian disaster in the impoverished Himalayan nation of 28 million, an overwhelmed government appealed for foreign help. India was first to respond by sending in military aircraft with medical equipment and relief teams.

By Rupam Jain Nair and Gopal Sharma

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Hundreds of Nepalis, angered and frustrated by the government's slow response, were digging through rubble themselves on Tuesday to find remains of their loved ones after a devastating earthquake three days ago killed more than 4,000 people.

International aid has finally begun arriving in the Himalayan nation of 28 million people but disbursement is slow. A Home Ministry official in the capital, Kathmandu, said the death toll from Saturday's 7.9 magnitude quake stood at 4,010, with 7,598 injured.

Nepal quake toll passes 6,100, $2 billion needed for reconstruction

By Rupam Jain Nair and Gopal Sharma

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - The death toll from Nepal's devastating earthquake rose steadily past 6,100 on Friday as fresh aftershocks and the stench of rotting bodies made it hard for nervous survivors to return to their homes.

Disposal of the hundreds of bodies still being found six days after the 7.9 magnitude quake devastated the Himalayan nation of 28 million people was becoming a problem for officials, who have ordered immediate cremations.

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Bureaucracy at Kathmandu airport was holding up vital relief supplies for survivors of the earthquake in Nepal on Saturday as the death toll from the disaster passed 6,600.

More aid from the US and other nations coming in as the death toll reportedly slips past 7,000 dead:

142 U.S. troops involved with Nepal earthquake relief

There are 142 U.S. service members currently involved in earthquake relief efforts in Nepal, according to U.S. Pacific Command.

That breaks down to 86 Marines, 38 soldiers and 18 airmen, PACOM spokesman Army Maj. David Eastburn told Military Times on Sunday.

The Los Angeles Times reported Saturday that as many as 500 U.S. troops could be part of relief efforts, but Eastburn could not verify that figure.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse for Nepal, another earthquake has hit the country, measuring 7.4 in magnitude according to the US Geological Survey. The quake occurred near the town of Namche Bazar, close to Mount Everest, with its epicentre in an isolated area near the Chinese border.

Reports say that people fled from buildings in the capital of Kathmandu as the earthquake struck at 12:35 p.m. local time. Shocks are said to have been felt as far away as New Delhi, the capital of India, and Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
