Indonesian searchers believe crashed AirAsia's fuselage found

By Kanupriya Kapoor

PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia (Reuters) - Indonesian search teams believe a sonar scan has detected the fuselage of an AirAsia airliner that crashed two weeks ago with the loss of all 162 people on board and divers were on Sunday checking the find, a senior official said.

Indonesia AirAsia Flight QZ8501 lost contact with air traffic control during thundery weather on Dec. 28, less than halfway into a two-hour flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore. There were no survivors.

Divers find both black boxes in AirAsia crash, but only 1 retrieved from bottom of Java Sea

PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia - Divers retrieved one black box Monday and located the other from the AirAsia plane that crashed more than two weeks ago, key developments that should help investigators unravel what caused the aircraft to plummet into the Java Sea.
The cockpit voice recorder was found hours after officials announced that the flight data recorder had been pulled from beneath a piece of the aircraft's wing and brought to the sea's surface, said Suryadi Bambang Supriyadi, operation co-ordinator for Indonesia's national search and rescue agency.
He said the voice recorder was about 20 metres (66 feet) away from the data recorder but remained lodged beneath heavy wreckage, and divers were struggling to free it at a depth of 32 metres (105 feet).

Divers retrieve crashed AirAsia jet's cockpit voice recorder

By Charlotte Greenfield and Nilufar Rizki

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesian divers pulled out the cockpit voice recorder from the sunken wreckage of an AirAsia passenger jet on Tuesday, a key step towards determining the cause of the crash that killed all 162 people aboard.

Indonesia AirAsia's Flight QZ8501 lost contact with air traffic control in bad weather on Dec. 28, less than halfway into a two-hour flight from Indonesia's second-biggest city of Surabaya to Singapore.

The cockpit voice recorder, which retains the last two hours of conversation between the pilots and with air traffic controllers, was found close to where the flight data recorder was recovered from the bottom of the Java Sea on Monday.

AirAsia captain left seat before jet lost control: sources
Reuters

By Siva Govindasamy, Kanupriya Kapoor and Tim Hepher
SINGAPORE/JAKARTA/PARIS (Reuters) - The captain of the AirAsia jet that crashed into the sea in December was out of his seat conducting an unusual procedure when his co-pilot apparently lost control, and by the time he returned it was too late to save the plane, two people familiar with the investigation said.
Details emerging of the final moments of Flight QZ8501 are likely to focus attention partly on maintenance, procedures and training, though Indonesian officials have not ruled out any cause and stress it is too early to draw firm conclusions.
