A dream run for the airline and its flamboyant boss, Tony Fernandes, turned sour on Sunday, as Indonesia AirAsia reported an Airbus 320-200 with 162 people on board went missing during a flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore.

Indonesia expands search for missing AirAsia jet, U.S. sends warship Mon Dec 29, 2014 7:47pm EST
By Gayatri Suroyo and Fergus Jensen
SURABAYA, Indonesia/JAKARTA (Reuters) - Countries around Asia on Tuesday stepped up the search for an AirAsia plane carrying 162 people that is presumed to have crashed in shallow waters off the Indonesian coast, with Washington also sending a warship to help find the missing jet.
Soelistyo, head of Indonesia's search and rescue agency, told local television the search area between the islands of Sumatra and Borneo would be expanded. The air force said authorities would investigate an oil spill sighted on Monday.
Authorities would also begin scouring islands in the area as well as land on Indonesia's side of Borneo. So far the focus of the search has been the Java Sea.

USS Sampson Finds Debris That May Be From Missing AirAsia Plane
TOKYO -- The Navy destroyer USS Sampson is among several search teams to report finding debris that may be from AirAsia Flight 8501, Navy officials said Wednesday. The ship's MH-60R search-and-rescue helicopters were launched to assist in the search efforts for the passenger plane that went missing Sunday, and the crews, working with multiple Indonesian assets, discovered debris hours after their arrival Tuesday. Lt. Lauren Cole, a spokesperson for 7th Fleet based out of Yokosuka, Japan, said the debris will be examined by Indonesian officials to determine if it is plane wreckage. The search area is among the most-trafficked shipping lanes in the world.

4 large objects found in AirAsia wreckage hunt
Associated Press 12:03 AM | Sunday, January 4th, 2015
PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia — Indonesian officials said Saturday that they were confident wreckage of AirAsia Flight 8501 had been located after sonar equipment detected four massive objects on the ocean floor.
The biggest piece, measuring 18 meters (59 feet) long and 5.4 meters (18 feet) wide, appeared to be part of the jet’s body, said Henry Bambang Soelistyo, chief of the National Search and Rescue Agency.
Though strong currents and big surf have prevented divers from entering waters to get a visual of the suspected fuselage, officials are hopeful they will find many of the 162 passengers and crew still strapped in their seats inside.

Indonesia naval captain says may have located missing plane's tail section
By Fergus Jensen and Adriana Nina Kusuma
PANGKALAN BUN/JAKARTA, Indonesia (Reuters) - An Indonesian naval patrol vessel has found what could be the tail of a crashed AirAsia passenger jet, the section where the crucial black box voice and flight data recorders are located, officials said on Monday.
News of the possible breakthrough came as the transport ministry in Jakarta said some officials on duty at the time of the accident will be moved to other roles. It also announced it was tightening rules on pre-flight procedures.

Divers spot tail of AirAsia plane in Java Sea; black boxes located in that part of the jet The Canadian Press
By Achmad Ibrahim – 6 hours ago
PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia - Divers and an unmanned underwater vehicle on Wednesday spotted the tail of the AirAsia plane that crashed into the Java Sea with 162 people on board, an important finding because the jet's black boxes are located in that part of the aircraft, an official said. Powerful currents and murky water continue to hinder the operation, but searchers managed to get a photograph of the debris — about 9 kilometres (nearly 6 miles) from where Flight 8501 lost contact Dec. 28 — after it was detected by an Indonesian survey ship, National Search and Rescue chief Henry Bambang Soelistyo told reporters.

Tail of crashed AirAsia plane lifted from seabed; officials unsure if black boxes are inside The Canadian Press
PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia - A tail section from the crashed AirAsia plane became the first major wreckage lifted off the seabed Saturday, two weeks after Flight 8501 went down, killing all 162 people on board. The red metal chunk, with the word "Asia" written across it, was brought to the surface using inflatable balloons. It was not immediately clear whether the cockpit voice and flight data recorders — located in the plane's rear — were inside this piece or had detached when the Airbus A320 plummeted into the sea Dec. 28. Their recovery is essential to finding out why it crashed. The debris was hoisted from a depth of about 30 metres (100 feet), and local TV footage showed it resting on a ship.
