Cops’ guns sealed to prevent holiday firing, needless deaths

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday ordered to sealing with masking tape of the muzzles of the service firearms of its 150,000 policemen to prevent any indiscriminate firing during the holidays.

Policemen were warned they would be severely sanctioned if they fire their guns during the holiday revelry, particularly on New Year’s Eve, which claimed several lives in past years.

MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE 2 - 2:05 p.m.) Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina, the acting Philippine National Police chief, has ordered summary dismissal proceedings against police personnel found to have violated the directive against firing their guns during the holiday season.
The order came as more persons were reported wounded and killed by stray bullets over Yuletide than last year.

The PNP National Operations Center in Camp Crame logged 18 incidents of illegal firearms discharge that left 30 wounded and one killed.

During the 2013 holidays, 20 persons were injured and one killed.
PNP spokesman, Chief Superintendent Wilben Mayor said Police Officers 1 Jhoy Velasco, Bouchard Ramos, Christian Agbuya, PO2 Argel Balicud, and PO3 Jorge Manayan Reyes III have all been relieved and disarmed, although Velasco has reportedly escaped and is being hunted by his colleagues
