'Jokowi' claims victory in tight Indonesia presidential race By: Sam Reeves, Agence France-Presse July 9, 2014 4:08 PM
JAKARTA -- Jakarta governor Joko Widodo declared victory Wednesday in Indonesia's tightest and most divisive presidential race since the downfall of dictator Suharto, which has pitted him against ex-general Prabowo Subianto.
It came after unofficial tallies from polling agencies showed him leading with around 53 percent of the vote against Prabowo's 47 percent.
Flanked by members of his Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle in the capital, Widodo said: "We would like to greatly thank all the Indonesian people ... as well as party members who worked hard from morning to evening."
There was no immediate reaction from Prabowo.
It came after a bitterly fought campaign that saw longtime favorite Widodo's lead shrink dramatically even as voters in the world's third-biggest democracy faced a choice of starkly different candidates.

Indonesia to announce results in disputed presidential poll By: Sam Reeves, Agence France-Presse July 20, 2014 8:26 AM
JAKARTA - Jakarta governor Joko Widodo is expected to be declared the winner of Indonesia's disputed presidential election this week but his rival, ex-general Prabowo Subianto, is likely to mount a legal challenge that will prolong the political deadlock.
Both candidates declared victory at the July 9 poll after a bitterly fought campaign in the world's third-biggest democracy, however reliable pollsters predict Widodo will win by several points when the lengthy vote-counting process is completed.
The election was the tightest and most divisive in Indonesia since the downfall of dictator Suharto in 1998, and has emerged as the biggest test yet for the young democracy.

Indonesian president-elect Jokowi calls for unity after bitter election BY JONATHAN THATCHER AND KANUPRIYA KAPOOR JAKARTA Tue Jul 22, 2014 10:34pm EDT
(Reuters) - Joko "Jokowi" Widodo was declared the winner of Indonesia's presidential election on Tuesday, bringing the promise of major reforms to the world's third largest democracy.
The Elections Commission, known as KPU, said the Jakarta governor had won by just over six percentage points, with 53.15 percent of the nearly 130 million votes cast on July 9.
It was the closest and most bitterly fought election in Indonesia's history, pitting Jokowi against former general Prabowo Subianto, whose promise of strong leadership brought echoes of decades under autocratic rule.

A new era in Indonesian democracy?

The New Face of Indonesian Democracy
Joko Widodo may be the world’s most modest national leader. does the President-to-be have what it takes to run the vast nation?
The passenger sitting in 42K, deep in economy class, orders a cup of milk from the flight attendant, then leans against the window for a nap. Far below, as Garuda Indonesia Flight GA 226 heads east toward the Indonesian heartland city of Solo, an angry mountain sends a vermilion blaze into the night sky, just another eruption in a country with the most active volcanoes on earth. A little girl named Shakira slowly makes her way to the bathrooms at the back of the plane, checking out each traveler with the forthright stare of a 5-year-old. She glances at the sleeping figure, then points, like an overexcited tourist on safari. “It’s Mr. Jokowi,” she says, delighted at her discovery. “He’s on the plane with me.”
On Oct. 20, Joko Widodo, universally known by the nickname Jokowi, will be sworn in as the seventh...
