'Armed men' intercept fishermen in South China Sea: Xinhua BEIJING Wed May 7, 2014 1:47am EDT (Reuters) - Contact has been lost with 11 fishermen in the South China Sea after they were intercepted by "armed men" and their ship seized in waters not far from the Philippines, China's state news agency Xinhua reported on Wednesday. They were on board the fishing boat Qiongqionghai 09063, which was intercepted by an unidentified armed vessel at about 10 a.m. (0200 GMT) in waters off Half Moon Shoal in the Spratly Islands, Xinhua said, citing a fishing association in Qionghai on China's southern island province of Hainan. The shoal is some 100 km (60 miles) from the Philippines' Palawan island. "Several armed men forced themselves onto the boat and fired four or five shots in the air. They then took control of the boat," Xinhua said. A second fishing boat escaped, but then encountered another armed boat, though it was able to get away, the report added. The Qionghai government has sent other trawlers operating close by to help look for the fishermen, but has yet to find them, Xinhua said. Reuters was not immediately able to reach officials in Hainan for comment. It was also unclear from the report if the fishermen were Chinese nationals. <snipped> |

Looks like someone was fishing without their bully white ships to protect them. CMS/CCG was caught with their pants down.
Vietnam demands China stop oil drilling operations in a disputed patch of the South China Sea. Vietnamese: That is illegal. Chinese: Non-sense! The activity was being carried out in our territorial waters. Stop taking provocative actions! The Philippine resupply mission to Ayungin Shoal. Philippines: We are here to exercise the freedom of navigation in the high seas and resupply our men. Chinese: Non-sense! Turn around this is our territory. Stop taking provocative actions! PHL police arrest Chinese fishermen. Chinese: Release our men. Stop taking provocative actions! They were only taking endangered and protected marine species. It's only provocative to the animals! Philippines: We have thrown them overboard and let the fish and other marine animals pass judgement on them. After all... It's really their territory.

Vietnam, Philippines Incidents Raise Sea Tensions VU TRONG KHANH in Hanoi and JOSEPHINE CUNETA in Manila May 7, 2014 Philippine police said Wednesday that its maritime group had apprehended a Chinese fishing vessel loaded with hundreds of sea turtles near Half Moon Shoal, a sandbar in the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, drawing swift condemnation from Beijing. Philippines police senior inspector Dante Padilla told The Wall Street Journal that a police patrol boat from Palawan, the biggest Philippine island near the Spratlys, was dispatched on Tuesday to Half Moon Shoal after receiving reports of the presence of Chinese fishing vessel in the area, located around 100 kilometers, or around 60 miles, from the island province. Mr. Padilla said the maritime police found the vessel in the area and an inspection of the boat yielded around 500 sea turtles, some of them dead. He said the police had arrested the captain of the Chinese vessel and its 10 crew members. In a statement Wednesday, the Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs said it seized the Chinese fishing boat "to enforce maritime laws and to uphold Philippine sovereign rights over its [exclusive economic zone]." Ms. Hua, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, on Wednesday called on the Philippines to release the fishermen and to refrain from taking further actions China would consider provocative. Ms. Hua said the Chinese Embassy in Manila had complained to the Philippine government. The Wall Street Journal Edited by Hong Nam, May 8 2014, 12:25 AM.
