My sympathies to all Filipinos in the wake of Super Typhoon Yolanda. But it did bring some good news.

'Yolanda' kicks out Chinese from Ayungin Reef, Philippine Marines on grounded ship safe

MANILA - Super typhoon Yolanda has sent home Chinese maritime and Navy vessels at the Ayungin Reef in Palawan, while the half a dozen Philippine Marines on board a rusting and grounded World War II-era ship are safe, a source told InterAksyon.com.

This effectively ends the standoff between the two countries some 100 nautical miles from the island of Palawan.

Ayungin is part of the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG) in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). China claims the reef is part of its territory, more than a thousand nautical miles from its nearest 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

"They're safe. They were not washed away," said a senior officer of the Philippine Marines guarding the reef on board the shipwreck BRP Sierra Madre (Landing Ship Tank 57). The Philippine Marine official requested that he not be named because he is not authorized to give any statement regarding operational activities in the West Philippine Sea.

The source said the Chinese Navy ship, maritime ships, and fishing vessels left Ayungin two or three days before Yolanda struck the country.

"As of now, we've no report that the Chinese ships have returned to Ayungin. Maybe because another storm is approaching the country," he said.

The AFP is so busy in the releif efforts in the devastation of Typhoon Yolanda. I don't think the AFP will cross their minds in putting or stationing their soldiers to the place.

Navy to air-drop X'mas presents to soldiers on old shipwreck
By Redempto Anda
Inquirer Southern Luzon
5:33 am Saturday, December 14th, 2013

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan, Philippines - The Philippine Navy announced on Friday it will send an aircraft to Ayungin Shoal in the disputed Spratlys before Christmas to air-drop gifts and donations pooled by volunteer groups for soldiers stationed on a shipwreck to guard territory claimed by the Philippines.

The air drop has so far been the main method used by the Philippine military in Palawan to resupply the small contingent of soldiers deployed in Ayungin Shoal, which is also being claimed by China and several other countries.

Naval officials said because there is no more scheduled supply run to the Kalayaan Island Group in December, they would organize the air drop operation solely to bring the gifts to the soldiers.

"We don't often use this method of resupply anymore because it poses a greater risk both to the airmen and the people who are the recipients, but we want to value the efforts of these groups," said naval pilot Lt. Herbert Estabillo.

The gift packages were donated by former cadets and solicited from various social networking sites, primarily Facebook. The donations include food, personal sanitation kits, batteries, flashlights, reading materials and personal letters.

"These packages will be sent through air drop by pilots and crew of the Naval Air Group, Philippine Navy," Estabillo added.
The donations include items raised by the Cadet Alumni Organization of the UP Military Science and Tactics Department and two Facebook groups, #pagasaKIG and #Timawa Donation Group.

"Through this kind of initiative the three organizations hope to encourage other private organizations to support Philippine soldiers detailed at the KIG," Estabillo said.

EXCLUSIVE | Philippine report spies more 'assertive, aggressive' China in West Philippine Sea

MANILA, Philippines - A more assertive and aggressive Chinese military presence has been monitored near the Philippine garrison on Ayungin Shoal, located in the disputed Spratly Islands in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).

A confidential government report, obtained by TV5, indicates the "assertive and aggressive" stance of China could be part a renewed and possibly a more determined effort to remove Philippine military presence on Ayungin Shoal and from the whole Spratly Islands group. A dilapidated Philippine Navy Ship, the BRP Sierra Madre, was grounded on the shoal in 1999 and now serves as the barracks and command facility of Philippine Marines deployed there.

China had accused the Philippines of intentionally grounding the BRP Sierra Madre as part of what it claimed was an occupation strategy. Since then, China has made repeated demands that the ship and soldiers be removed. In 2013, Beijing offered to remove the BRP Sierra Madre at no cost to the Philippines.

China claims to have driven off Philippine boats from disputed Second Thomas Shoal
By: Reuters
March 10, 2014 7:11 PM

BEIJING -- China said on Monday that coast guard ships had driven away two Filipino vessels that had tried to approach a shoal in the South China Sea, which Manila calls the West Philippine Sea, in the latest flare-up of a long-running territorial dispute.

The Chinese ships were patrolling waters around Second Thomas Shoal, known in China as the Ren'ai reef, when they spotted the boats, carrying construction materials and Philippine flags, which left the area after being warned off, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said.

The incident happened on Sunday, he added.

Qin said that China had repeatedly demanded the Philippines remove a ship that had been grounded on the shoal in 1999, but that Manila had cited technical reasons for being unable to do so.

"This time, the Philippine side has again attempted to start construction on the reef," he told a daily news briefing. "The moves infringed China's sovereignty."

China had no choice but to respond to the Philippines' moves, Qin added.
