China should take more territory from Phl – Chinese general
By Jose Katigbak STAR Washington bureau (The Philippine Star) |
Updated November 2, 2013 - 12:00am

NEW YORK – Surround a disputed area with all types of ships, enclose it like a cabbage and hold on to it.

That’s the so-called cabbage strategy that China is employing to stake its maritime territorial claims, and a ranking Chinese military officer says his country should take more disputed territory from the Philippines, The New York Times Magazine has reported.

Quoting Maj. Gen. Zhang Zhaozhong of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, the Sunday magazine cover article said China began taking measures “to seal and control” areas around Panatag or Scarborough Shoal, which the Chinese call the Huangyan Islands, following a standoff with the Philippines last year.

The magazine article, quoting Zhang, reported that the cabbage strategy involved “surrounding a contested area with so many boats – fishermen, fishing administration ships, marine surveillance ships, navy warships.” The island “is thus wrapped layer by layer like a cabbage,” Zhang reportedly said in a television interview given in May.

@gammy,

PDAF Scam and all other PH Political Circus issues maybe all part of the DELAYS, game plan.. :dunno:

The bully has "3 more years left"- (clue?) to steal harvest Ayungin Shoal and other PH Territories, AFPM Plans, Procurements and all, although it may seem like a big deal and change right now, I think "there's more than meets the eye" here..

The Philippines having serious major problems and issues with regards to it's External Security threats, Countless Intrusions, illegal occupation of it's territories by External threats, Threats to harm our Citizens abroad and many more.. Does the Passive Present and Temporary thinks that the Country is in trouble???

We can compare our situation with Vietnam, when they had problems with China regarding their oil/gas exploration ventures, in a short spun of time, what were the first few things they've tried to accomplish to deter any threats? How many Military Hardware Equipments, Procurements were accomplished and delivered to them ASAP???

If we try to compare Vietnam's problems with China against the Philippines present problems, "It's a NO BRAINER!"

LET US ALL PRAY FOR OUR COUNTRY & THE SAFETY AND LIVES OF OUR FILIPINO MARINES STATIONED IN AYUNGIN SHOAL & OTHER TERRITORIES!

The AFP modernization is progressing too slowly , and at a scale too small.

Panatag shoal may already be half gone , but the Philippines must take a firm stand on Ayungin.

The way this can be done is to massively expand the PCG and copy what they're doing. Surround your shoals with your own boats.

Raising a new fleet of coast guard boats is much much cheaper than building a naval fleet. For example , Japan. the JCG has very small budget compared to the the JMSDF , even after funds are allocated to build dozens more cutters.

^exactly! Mind you, it should have been PNoy's Govt. alternative move during the Scar stand-off, they should have sent some back ups for GDP, for PN try to tow some Old LST's 2 move to Station some PM's and PN assets inside the shoal, just like how those CH poachers illegally take shelter from within even during Monsoon season right?.. If they can do it, much more we can!

Oh well, it seems from the start, it's not part of the PLAN.. Even the PCG will hesitate doing the "Para sa inang bayan move" considering they can end up being prosecuted/ jailed by their own Govt..? :armyLol: Turmeric times:armyroleyes:

We are the weakest, thanks to the past presidencies.

Also, we couldn't very well expect a very vast improvement in just a span of three years, or even six years, for that matter; even China couldn't. It took them more than two decades, more than a million men lost, and no less than two major policy changes to reach even a small magnitude of able self-defense.

However, the path President Aquino is taking is perhaps both the best and the worst one; the best since it is the only viable option, and the worst since it requires great sacrifice of sovereignty (for a time, at least, until we get the leverage we need) and not a small amount of humility on our part.
Success through information, victory through disinformation.

Gazmin hopes China stays away from Phl territories
By Alexis Romero (philstar.com)
Updated November 4, 2013 - 6:36pm

MANILA, Philippines - Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin is hoping that China would not intrude into areas that are within Philippine territory.

Asked to comment on reports quoting a Chinese general as saying that China should take more areas from the Philippines, Gazmin said: “Huwag lang pakikialaman yung ating lugar (They should not touch our territory).”

A recent article by the New York Times Magazine quoted Maj. Gen. Zhang Zhaozhong of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army as saying that Beijing should assert its territorial claims by surrounding a contested area with ships and wrap it like a cabbage.

“We should do more such things in the future. For those small islands, only a few troopers are able to station on each of them, but there is no food or even drinking water there,” Zhang was quoted in the article as saying, referring to a strategy to take territories from the Philippines.

“If we carry out the cabbage strategy, you will not be able to send food and drinking water onto the islands. Without the supply for one or two weeks, the troopers stationed there will leave the islands on their own. Once they have left, they will never be able to come back.”
