PHL vows defense of exclusive zone in South China Sea
Sunday, 19 May 2013

The Philippines owns its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the South China Sea and is duty-bound to protect it even as Manila and other parties try to help ensure unhampered access even to disputed waters there by all countries.

Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose L. Cuisia made this statement during the annual Meeting of the World Affairs Council of Greater Hampton Roads on Friday (Washington time).

- "It is essential that the Philippines work with other countries to guarantee freedom of navigation in the South China Sea, where an estimated $1.3 trillion in US trade flows through annually."

- "When another country declares that it owns about 75 percent of what the Philippines owns as exclusive economic zone, we are duty bound to stand up and protect it."

- "When another country stations its boats on a shoal that is a mere 120 miles from our mainland and more than 400 miles from theirs, the Philippines cannot just keep quiet."

According to the Philippine ambassador, it has become more imperative for Manila to build a minimum credible defense posture to serve as deterrent to any aggressive action that may be taken against the Philippines.

Well said! I am in total agreement with him. Question is: When will this attempt to build a "minimum defense posture" be started? - and I am not talking about the planning stage, as it doesn't count. We all know talk is cheap, but it's the deed that brings home the results.

the planning stage? it does count sir.. with our limited resources, we just can't go on a buying spree.. although honestly, it is very frustrating sometimes because of the international incidents that is occuring, the Scarborough Shoal again being taken away from us, Sabah, and now the province of Taiwan..

Parastriker
May 19 2013, 11:14 PM
Oh, soon, not very soon (that means not for another year at least), but soon. I like the rumors floating around in the European and American Tor forums.
Sana nga Parastriker magkatotoo yang mga sinasabi mo. Kung next year or succeeding years pa kasi mga acquisition natin darating e baka maubusan na tayo ng isla sa WPS. A credible force will do while waiting for the real thing! :specool:

Well, Ambassador Cuisia made a trip down Hampton Downs and checked out the USS Wasp. Maybe that is what we need in WPS to provide deterrence. He won't check it out for nothing right? Well, Virginia Beach, VA is like San Diego, a Pinoy country!

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines will have no problem with China as long as its vessels in Ayungin Reef are not exploting the resources in the area, according to the chief of the Philippine Navy.

“However, if there is exploitation of [our resources there], then that is another matter that has to be discussed. And if indeed it can be shown they [are exploiting our resources], necessary protest can be made,” Vice Admiral Jose Luis Alano told reporters after the Philippine Navy anniversary rites on Tuesday at Sangley Point in Cavite City.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Chinese vessels had encroached into Ayungin and built structures in the area.

MANILA, Philippines -– The Philippine government has protested what it calls “provocative and illegal presence” of two Chinese surveillance vessels and a military ship within its exclusive economic zone in the West Philippine Sea.

Manila also called on Beijing to respect Manila’s sovereignty over its waters.

In a provocative move that could spike tensions anew between Manila and Beijing, two Chinese maritime surveillance ships and a warship were spotted off Ayungin Shoal, which Manila says is within its territorial waters.

The government ships appeared to have accompanied some 30 Chinese fishing vessels which are scattered in Ayungin Shoal, the Kalayaan Island Group and the Mischief Reef - a rich fishing ground within Philippine territory but came under Chinese control in 1995.

Philippines Vows to Defend Territory Against China

http://ph.news.yahoo.com/grounded-ship-philippines-last-line-defence-034643325.html

The Philippines vowed Thursday to "defend what is ours" as part of a stand-off over a Chinese warship circling a South China Sea reef which is occupied by Filipino marines. The Philippines this week protested the "provocative and illegal presence" of the warship near Second Thomas Shoal, but China brushed off the complaint with an insistence that the area was part of its territory.

Philippine foreign department spokesman Raul Hernandez said Thursday the warship, along with two patrol vessels and a fleet of Chinese fishing boats, remained near the shoal."They should not be there. They do not have the right to be there... no-one should doubt the resolve of the Filipino people to defend what is ours in that area," Hernandez said in a text message to AFP."Our navy and our coastguard are mandated to enforce the laws of the (Philippine) republic."
