We should convert all our WHECs into Coast Guard ships so that we will not militarize our claim. After all these ships were originally Coast Guard vessel with the Americans.
I think we should send also our own coast guard vessels within the ayungin shoal area.. not to provoke those chinese but also to assert what is ours..

As stated by PN before, they need frigates as much as as fast as possible and the WHECs are the fastest they can get... The PCG would be well-equipped when the 10 boats from Japan starts coming on 2015.

I wish these reporters would at least get the difference between Marines and Soldiers right, no matter how similar civilian reporters think they are. :headbang:

Philippine soldiers on lonely Ayungin Shoal outpost face the 'enemy'

By: Jason Guterrez, Agence France-Presse
April 2, 2014 5:56 PM

PUERTO PRINCESSA - Nine hungry marines guarding the Philippines' loneliest outpost aboard a rusted World War II vessel had just one option after Chinese vessels blocked fresh supplies from reaching them -- go fishing.

The troops were 200 kilometres (120 miles) from the nearest major Philippine island, holding on to a tiny reef in the South China Sea as part of a decades-long territorial row that in recent months had grown increasingly hostile.

"We knew about the dangers signing on to the job, but my worry was we were running out of supplies," Mike Pelotera, the leader of the Marine unit, told AFP after his five-month mission ended this week and he returned to shore.

"But we are marines and we adapt, we went fishing."

Even one WHEC for PCG would be enough. Why? Ayungin shoal is dangerous for bigger vessels to approach. What we need is helicopter transport of supplies from WHEC stationed nearby to BRP Sierra Madre.

I think those Japanese patrol boats do not have the capability to support helicopter ops.

PH Navy ready to pay price for maintaining 'ghost' ship (abs-cbnnews.com)

Ships carrying supplies for Sierra Madre usually come from the headquarters of the Naval Forces West (Navforwest) in Ulugan Bay in Palawan.

With a liter of diesel costing P44, every re-supply operation thus costs the government P3.6 million.

“I have ample provisions. Even if it will take me one month, I am not returning. I am bringing in fresh troops and bringing home our colleagues who have been deployed at BRP Sierra Madre for almost five months,” said LtSg. Ferdinand Gato, who led last Saturday’s successful delivery of supplies to the Sierra Madre garrison.

“We are also spending aviation fuel for our air support as well as thousands of liters of fuel for other ships mobilized as backup each time we conduct our resupply and troop rotation operations. But it’s worth it. Our freedom, territorial integrity and sovereignty are priceless,” a Wescom official who asked not to be named said.

There are other expenses apart from fuel, officials said.

Soldiers deployed to areas being claimed by China are entitled to extra “loneliness pay.”

Outgoing Ayungin Shoal detachment commander, 1Lt Mike Pelotera, said troops assigned at Ayungin are receiving extra allowance equivalent to half of their monthly base pay, or much higher than the P500 combat allowance their land-based colleagues are entitled to.

On Araw ng Kagitingan, PNoy pays tribute to 'Ayungin 9'

By: Agence France-Presse
April 9, 2014 6:05 PM

MANILA, Philippines -- President Benigno Aquino III paid tribute Wednesday to the nine Marines who stood guard over a disputed outpost in the South China Sea, also called the West Philippine Sea by Manila, amid rising tensions with Beijing.

Aquino, speaking to World War II veterans at rites marking the 72nd anniversary of the Fall of Bataan, vowed to continue modernizing the poorly equipped armed forces as it faced challenges protecting the country’s territorial integrity.

He praised the Marines who spent five months aboard the BRP Sierra Madre, a rusted ship grounded on disputed Ayungin Shoal that serves as an outpost for the Philippines in the remote Spratly Islands.

"Just think of the gravity of their sacrifice," Aquino said. "For five months, their entire world revolved around the sea. They had almost no communication with their families."

"There were even times when the supplies and food they needed were blocked from reaching them."

It's a 'test of sanity,' says Ayungin soldier
By Frances Mangosing
INQUIRER
Friday, April 11th, 2014

MANILA, Philippines - "Don't lose hope," a soldier previously assigned at BRP Sierra Madre tells future men who will be assigned there.
Marine First Lieutenant Mike Pelotera led eight soldiers at the BRP Sierra Madre, a rusting ship that serves as the Philippine Navy detachment in Ayungin Shoal in the disputed West Philippine Sea, a resource-rich territory claimed by China but is within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.

Pelotera's team was surrounded by water for five months and he said the assignment was "a test of sanity." Soldiers stationed in Ayungin usually serve for only three months.

Pelotera said it is also important for the soldiers assigned there to take care of themselves. Asked if he would be willing to be assigned there again, he answered yes without having second thoughts.

US helped PH Navy in Ayungin mission
April 11, 2014
Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – The US assisted the Philippine Navy in the tense mission to rotate troops trapped for 5 months in the disputed Ayungin Shoal following China's "blockade," Philippine Ambassador to US Jose Cuisia Jr. said Friday, April 11.

"I don't specifically know the details and they will not discuss that. When you tell them, then China will know what to look for the next time around," Cuisia told reporters in Manila.

"We know that they [US] assisted the Philippine Navy in being able to evade the Chinese ships.... I think it was the strategy that was discussed," Cuisia added.

Cuisia said this was "normal" and "will continue" as part of the "continuing military security alliance" with the US, which has been helping the Philippines in aerial surveillance. The US is a treaty ally of the Philippines under the Mutual Defense Treaty and Visiting Forces Agreement.

A US Navy P8 Poseidon spotted circling and flying low by reporters in Ayungin shoal.

"I can feel their (US) presence. Paikot-ikot," a reporter who joined the mission told Rappler. This gave them a sense of security, the reporter said, especially after the incident with the Chinese coast guard ships and the presence of Chinese helicopters.
