MANILA — The Chinese coast guard prevented delivery of supplies to Filipino soldiers guarding a disputed shoal in the South China Sea and an envoy rejected a Philippine protest over the interference, officials said yesterday.Chinese ships prevented two Filipino civilian vessels hired by the Philippine navy from reaching Second Thomas Shoal on Sunday, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. The shoal is called Ayungin Shoal by Manila and Ren’ai Reef by the Chinese.

“For 15 years, we have conducted regular resupply missions and personnel rotation without interference from China,” he said.He said the Chinese ships used digital signs, sirens and megaphones in ordering the Filipino vessels to leave. The Filipinos returned to Palawan, the nearest Philippine province east of the Shoal.China’s charge d’affaires was summoned and handed the protest note. Mr Hernandez said that as in the past, Beijing rejected the protest.

Manila air drops supplies to troops on disputed shoal
MANILA Wed Mar 12, 2014 5:32am EDT

(Reuters) - The Philippines air dropped food and water to soldiers stationed on a grounded transport ship on the disputed Second Thomas Shoal, after China blocked two Filipino supply ships from reaching the troops, a senior navy official said on Wednesday.

Chinese ships patrolling waters around Second Thomas Shoal, known in China as the Ren'ai reef, on Sunday ordered the Philippine ships carrying construction materials to leave the area.

Beijing claims Manila is trying to start construction on the disputed reef after it ran aground an old transport ship in 1999 to mark its territory and stationed marines on the ship. Manila claims the Shoal is part of the Philippine's continental shelf.

"We only intend to improve the conditions there, we have no plans to expand or build permanent structures on the shoal," said a Philippines navy official, who declined to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

Depressing to see officials always responding from a defeatist's point of view.

The shoal belongs to the Philippines. Whether the supplies are for structure expansion , or for normal food/water supply , makes no difference and require no explanation to the public or the Chinese government.

This is why the AFP must be on alert whenever there is a (foreign) crisis (ie Ukraine). China has a habit of seizing territories whenever the US is distracted.

Paano mga bayad na siguro iyan, like under their pockets. NR coming from the Senate and Congress means admission and they'd rather talk about other things just to smell nice for 2016 or showbiz problems rather our Country's territorial threats, the lives of our PM soldiers are under threat in Ayungin Shoal, now what's next PAG-ASA Island???

I suggest it's time for our AFP and the Govt. to spend big time ASAP on Anti ship missiles, anti air missiles that can be readily deployed on all PN ships, shore batteries that can be fired from Palawan, Pag-Asa and to include Ilocos Norte and Batanes Island for anti access denial.

A question is whether the chinese already knew what was on the civilian ships before they even left for the shoal.
Since the construction supplies are only "for improvement there", it may have not been readily obvious to one of the chinese coast guard observers at the shoal that there are in fact are in fact items for construction onboard the Philippine vessels. But they did know and so they were able to act in time to bar the approaching ships. So this incident leaves a lot to ponder about OPSEC matters.

There's really a connection here or either China is trying to gain something on the Ukraine crisis as shown from their recent actions in Ayungin Shoal, then US hitting China with it's provocative moves in Ayungin and then comes China's recent show of support or giving a warning or caution to the West regarding possible sanctions for Russia...

let's hope NOT for the US doesn't end up choosing between Ukraine crisis against PH brewing Ayungin Shoal/ WPS crisis, it's pretty clear in some ways that they maybe wary of China throwing full support for Russia and later on vise versa in WPS. :dunno:

I still have high hopes for the US and other Allies regarding helping us if China decides to attack and the same with US, EU, NATO etc. on how to handle Russia in case anything happens.. let's not forget what NATO really is for and why NATO was created.

IMO, I think it's time for the US and it's Country Allies and others to create a NATO version in SE Asia! "Try and touch one of us and WE will touch you back!"

Remember SEATO? Remember why it failed?

China has too many client states in the region to make a successful NATO-esque pact. The best thing we can do is a multilateral defense treaty between all U.S. allies in the region.

"its time" you think! :headbang: apologies for what i said but that statement should be changed.
Technically we should have done it way before the frigate lift programs. In fact it should be priority 1 along with radars for f*** sake.

Zone defense should have been top priority. We should have known this because our country plays basketball for f*** sake. Flying a crappy wana be mrf and manning a whimpy frigate takes more time to train people and skill. Whereas zone defense all you have to do is look at a screen press a bunch of buttons and drive around the country waiting for order to push the red button. Plus we can get more ordinance that are meant to kill compared to less gear that are meant to deliver the payload while being cost effective.

if our dum officials wasnt so dum then we would have already posses area denial ability and china may not have bullied us as much as we are being bullied now.

we are submitting our final documents for our case at ITLOS this month then the case proceedings will start, thats why we need to avoid violence even if we are aggrieved because thats what the bully wants to confuse the situation. once ITLOS rules in our favor, thats when we can push back aggressively since international law is on our side(ITLOS ruling), and it will be easier for other countries to help us since our actions are covered legally.
