Quebec independence movement

The Quebec separatist movement seems to be gaining traction again because of the provincial election in Quebec. If the Parti Quebecois wins the election and gets to force an independence referendum, an independent Quebec is a distinct possibility.

Frankly, I think it's about time Canada let Quebec go its own way. That way, the rest of Canada (well with the exception of New Brunswick which also has a sizable Francophone population) won't have to put up bilingual signs in both French and English. That way, Canada can be true to its heritage as an ANGLOPHONE (English-speaking) British Commonwealth dominion like Australia and NZ. (Just my opinion, as a Fil-Canadian)

Furthermore, if Quebec becomes independent, part of the money used from the Alberta oil wealth won't be sent to Quebec for their Federal equalization payments anymore.

If Quebec leaves, perhaps they'll get 12 of Canada's 60+ remaining F18s, one of the 3 infantry regiments, the bases at CFB Valcartier and CFB Bagotville, and the 2 French-speaking crewed frigates, HMCS Ville de Quebec and HMCS Montreal.

Anyways, here's an article that includes a key challenge that the pro-independence activists in Quebec will face:

An independent Quebec would be among the West's most indebted countries

By Andy Radia | Canada Politics

If one week of the Quebec election campaign has taught us anything, it's that the sovereignty debate is alive and well in la belle province.

Interestingly, one thing the separatists in that province often seem to disregard is how an independent Quebec might fare with regard to its finances.

A series of Fraser Institute reports this week is shedding some light on that.

The studies collectively titled "The State of Quebec Indebtedness" claim that the province owes $175.5 billion (as of 2012-13), representing 49 per cent of Quebec’s GDP and the highest level of debt in the country.

"The failure of successive Quebec governments to control spending has added significantly to the province’s debt load and today saddles Quebec taxpayers with more than $9 billion in interest payments," Filip
Palda, Fraser Institute senior fellow and professor at the École nationale d'administration publique, noted in a press release accompanying the study.

Marois says independent Quebec would use dollar, request Bank of Canada seat

The Canadian Press

QUEBEC - An independent Quebec would keep using the Canadian dollar and ask for a seat at the Bank of Canada, Parti Quebecois Leader Pauline Marois said Wednesday.

Marois told reporters at a campaign stop that Canada would benefit from having a sovereign Quebec maintain its ties to the loonie and the central bank.

However, the leader of the province's independence movement acknowledged there would be no guarantees on how much influence a Quebec country would have with the Bank of Canada.

Canadian media mogul joins race to lead Quebec separatists

By Allison Lampert

MONTREAL (Reuters) - Canadian media mogul Pierre Karl Peladeau announced his candidacy to lead the separatist Parti Quebecois on Thursday, declaring his focus would be on taking the mainly French-speaking province of Quebec out of Canada.

The Parti Quebecois (PQ) has been without a leader since shortly after April's provincial election, in which the party suffered its worst defeat in 40 years. A recent poll, however, showed the PQ with Peladeau as leader would be ahead of the federalist Liberal Party, which won the April election, in popular support.

Asked by a reporter on Thursday what the theme of his campaign would be, Peladeau said: "Independence...I entered politics for independence."
