Unrest continues in a country as divided as Venezuela, as Pres. Maduro, the successor of Hugo Chavez, tries to stamp out dissent and opposition.

Fears of clashes high in Venezuela as pro- and anti-government forces plan competing marches
The Canadian Press

CARACAS, Venezuela - Fears of more clashes between pro- and anti-government supporters ratcheted up in Venezuela as both sides prepared to march in the capital Tuesday and opposition leader Leonardo Lopez dared authorities to arrest him when he reappears in public.

The competing demonstrations loomed one day after President Nicolas Maduro's government gave three U.S. Embassy officials 48 hours to leave the country, claiming they were supporting what he says are opposition plots to topple his socialist administration. The U.S. denied that.

Supporters of Lopez, who is Maduro's strongest foe and the target of an arrest order, rerouted their protest march away from the central plaza in Caracas where pro-government oil workers planned their own demonstration.

(CNN) -- Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is unapologetic about his government's response to opposition protesters during weeks of unrest in the South American country.

Think about what the U.S. government would do if a political group laid out a road map for overthrowing President Barack Obama, Maduro said in an exclusive interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour.

"What would happen in the United States if a group said they were going to start something in the United States so that President Obama leaves, resigns, to change the constitutional government of the United States?" Maduro said, according to a CNN translation of his remarks. "Surely, the state would react, would use all the force that the law gives it to re-establish order and to put those who are against the Constitution where they belong."

Venezuelan troops turn back 'empty pot' protesters
CBC

In a major show of force, hundreds of National Guardsmen in riot gear and armoured vehicles prevented an "empty pots march" to protest now-chronic food shortages from reaching Venezuela's Food Ministry on Saturday.

In another development, President Nicolas Maduro's socialist government celebrated an Organization of American States declaration supporting its efforts to bring a solution to the country's worst political violence in years, calling it a diplomatic victory.

The United States, Canada and Panama were the only nations to oppose the declaration.

3 more deaths in Venezuela as both sides march in show of force

Three more people died from Venezuela's political unrest as both supporters and opponents of President Nicolas Maduro took to the streets in new shows of force Saturday.

A man identified as Jesus Orlando Labrador was killed by a gunshot in the chest Saturday in the southwestern city of Merida, Mayor Carlos Garcia told The Associated Press. He said it happened when a suspected group of hard-line government supporters began shooting at anti-Maduro activists after a peaceful protest march.

Another victim, Argenis Hernandez, was shot in the stomach Friday by an angry motorist as he and other protesters manned a barricade on a highway outside Valencia, Venezuela's third-largest city and a major focal point of protests against Maduro. He died at a hospital before dawn Saturday, local officials said.

Ex-general, soldiers arrested in coup plot

CARACAS — Venezuelan officials say a retired air force general has been arrested and 13 other people are implicated in a plot to overthrow President Nicolas Maduro.

President Nicolas Maduro said the plan was to attack his presidential palace and other government buildings on Thursday.

Congress president Diosdado Cabello said in a television broadcast late Thursday evening that 11 soldiers were among those implicated, including a retired general, and he said several have been arrested.

He also named two opposition politicians and a businessman as plotters.

A sign of a true democracy is when opposition parties are allowed to flourish; if dissent is not allowed, then democracy doesn't exist because there is no alternative to the ruling regime.

U.S. asks Venezuela to scrap ban on opposition political candidates
Tue Aug 4, 2015 5:59pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Tuesday called on Venezuela to reverse a ban on opposition members from holding office and participating in the Dec. 6 parliamentary elections.

Washington made the request after opposition leader Maria Machado said she had tried to register on Monday as a candidate but her application was rejected.

The State Department said in a statement that the decisions by Venezuelan electoral officials "clearly have the intention of complicating the ability of the opposition" to contest the poll and to limit the field of candidates.
