China is playing the long game.

Why start a war when you can just buy your favoured candidate into power? It'd much easier this way.

Tried to be optimistic when some posters on the forum commented that Duturte is often unpredictable regarding his next moves. Now it's like my nightmare coming true after reading he and his cabinet's recent statements.

It is hugely illogical to tell your opponent that you are throwing you strongest and.possibly last card.

I have also noticed a common arguement from these china leaning presidents. Chinese investments. Every single time. Why not look for investments from other countries? Japan? Korea? They invest pretty heavily into se asia. US? Australia? There are plenty other options out there.

I find it hard to believe it's "Chinese investments", they can peddle that as "The Reason", because they can pretend they care for the good of the nation.
BUT.. IMHO, it's more likely they care for their own pockets more -- so replace "investments" with "bribes" and that's the reason you are looking for.

Duterte: PHL to use South China Sea ruling in efforts to resolve sea dispute | gma news - July 25, 2016

“We strongly affirm and respect the outcome of the case before the Permanent Court of Arbitration as an important contribution to the ongoing efforts to pursue a peaceful resolution and management of our disputes,” Duterte said in his first State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Duterte was also heard mistakenly pertaining to the South China Sea as the China Sea.

"With regards to the West Philippine Sea otherwise known as China Sea, we strongly affirm and respect...," he said.

Aguirre: PH to press PCA ruling on West PH Sea in bilateral talks with China
By: Ernie Reyes, InterAksyon
July 28, 2016 8:54 PM

MANILA - Department of Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre on Thursday said that pressing the ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitral (PCA) on the maritime dispute over the West Philippine Sea (WPS) would be the underlining agendum in prospective bilateral talks with China.

In an interview after being sworn in by Senate President Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III as the newest member of the political party PDP-Laban, Aguirre said that, when bilateral talks with China do push through, the Philippines will be raising factual situations concerning the WPS and in connection with the arbitral tribunal's decision.

DFA urges 'calm' in face of China threat to jail 'illegal fishers'
By: Carla Lim, News5

Philippines -- (UPDATE - 2:58 p.m.) The Department of Foreign Affairs called for “calm” Wednesday in the face of China’s threat to jail “illegal fishermen” it apprehends within territories it claims ownership of in the South China Sea.

“Sa side natin, maging mahinahon muna (For our side, we must remain calm for now),” DFA spokesman Charles Jose told reporters in a chance interview at a conference called by the department to discuss how to move forward and manage tensions following the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s ruling on the suit brought by the Philippines against China.

Beijing Flies Bombers Over Disputed South China Sea
Development comes as former Philippine leader heads to China for talks on resolving maritime dispute

By CRIS LARANO
Updated Aug. 7, 2016 12:13 p.m. ET

Beijing said over the weekend that it flew bombers, fighter jets and other military aircraft over contested areas of the South China Sea recently, an announcement that came as former Philippine President Fidel Ramos prepared to head to China for preliminary talks aimed at settling the territorial dispute.

The office of Mr. Ramos, who was appointed last month by President Rodrigo Duterte as special envoy to resolve the dispute following an international tribunal’s ruling against China’s claims, confirmed that he would travel to Beijing on Monday.

Mr. Ramos, 88 years old, is a respected elder statesman in Asia and has maintained good personal ties with China since ending his single, six-year term as president in 1998. A person close to Mr. Ramos said that he has been busy preparing for the talks with a small delegation that will travel with him, including his Mandarin-speaking grandson.

Ramos meets senior Chinese official to mend ties
By: Agence France-Presse
August 12, 2016 1:27 PM

HONG KONG, China -- Former President Fidel Ramos said Friday he had met with a senior Chinese official during a trip to Hong Kong aimed at improving ties between Manila and Beijing, with both sides working towards formal discussions.

Relations have cooled since a UN-backed tribunal ruled last month that China's claims over most of the South China Sea were invalid, in a sweeping victory for the Philippines which brought the case.

Ramos -- a longtime advocate of closer Philippine-Chinese ties -- was sent as a conciliatory envoy by President Rodrigo Duterte.

In a two-day meeting in Hong Kong, Ramos said he had discussions with Madam Fu Ying, chair of the foreign affairs committee of the National People's Congress -- China's communist-controlled legislature. Fu Ying is a former ambassador to Manila.

PANATAG SHOAL | House resolution filed for diplomatic discussions with China
By: Lira Dalangin-Fernandez, InterAksyon
August 12, 2016 7:26 PM

MANILA, Philippines - A resolution has been filed at the House of Representatives urging President Rodrigo Duterte, through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), to initiate diplomatic discussions with China on joint fishing, patrols and provision of humanitarian assistance to promote safety at sea at Panatag Shoal.

In filing House Resolution No. 196, Kabayan partylist Representative Harry Roque stressed that steps must not be taken to implement the decision of the Permanent Court of Arbitration on traditional fishing rights of both Filipino and Chinese fishermen in Panatag Shoal.

"The Philippines is bound by such an arbitral ruling even if the Philippine claims to Panatag as an island appear to be superior and indubitable, as evidenced by the exercise of judicial jurisdiction in the 1916 case of Erlanger vs. Swedish Asiatic (GR No. 10051)," he said.

Philippines eyes 'two-track' talks with China: envoy
By: Agence France-Presse
August 13, 2016 7:20 PM

MANILA - The Philippines and China discussed setting up a "two-track" system that would allow them to cooperate in some areas while separately handling "contentious issues" such as their South China Sea territorial dispute, a Manila envoy said Saturday.

Former president Fidel Ramos and ex-interior secretary Rafael Alunan discussed the proposal at meetings with Chinese representatives in Hong Kong on a trip aimed at improving relations.

Ramos, a longtime advocate of closer ties, said the talks were "very hospitable... very encouraging, in the sense that we have a common interest" in such goals as fighting global warming.

They met with Fu Ying, chair of the foreign affairs committee of the National People's Congress, China's communist-controlled legislature.

Here's how the Philippines can beat China in the South China Sea
Foreign Policy - James Holmes

Fabius Maximus' Doctrine:

(1) Exercise self-discipline, subduing your passion for quick victory. Refuse to fight a stronger foe on its own terms.
(2) Keep your alliances robust, supplementing your strength.
(3) Tend to the home front, sustaining political unity for a prolonged struggle while husbanding the sinews of national power.
(4) Be patient. Let the foe exhaust its fervor over time, yielding an acceptable peace.

"To be sure, students of Roman history would affix a coda to all of this, pointing out that Fabius didn’t win Rome’s war against Hannibal; Cornelius Scipio did. Fabian strategy wasn’t enough. Rome needed a Scipio: a brash, offensive-minded, risk-taking commander. Scipio carried the fight across the Mediterranean Sea, marching on Carthage itself, putting an end to the Second Punic War."

Chinese vessel enters PHL territory, crosses paths with Coast Guard ship
August 18, 2016

By ELIZABETH MARCELO, GMA News

- The face-off, which happened three weeks ago, occured 73 to 100 nautical miles from Subic coast.
- Two PCG vessels were accompanying the fishermen when one Chinese Coast vessel passed by in the area.
- They intend to continue patrolling as it is within our exclusive economic zone.
- The two PCG vessels were comparably smaller than the passing Chinese Coast Guard vessel. But they were very cordial. No untoward incident happened.
- This was contrary to previous incidents when Filipino fishermen were barred by the Chinese Coast Guard.
- With the new (PCA) ruling, we could now go there and go fishing there anytime we want.
