China summons G7 diplomats to protest South China Sea statement

BEIJING — Beijing says it has summoned diplomats from the Group of 7 industrialized countries to protest their statement criticizing China's island-building activities in the disputed South China Sea.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said Wednesday that China "solemnly clarified" to the diplomats its position on the issue. Beijing has defended its land reclamation work in the Spratly islands as within its territorial rights and accused the G-7 of diverging from its mission of safeguarding the global economy.

The statement issued by the G-7 foreign ministers on Monday expresses strong oppositions to any "intimidating, coercive or provocative unilateral actions that could alter the status quo and increase tensions."

WATCH: BUSINESS UNUSUAL | Chinese ease Panatag tension, Pinoy fishers back
By: Carla Lim, News5 | With InterAksyon.com and Mia Reyes, News5
May 22, 2016 4:28 PM

INFANTA, Pangasinan - The local manlalaot from Masinloc, Zambales were at first somewhat dumbfounded, but the bafflement later gave way to elation.

The group of fishermen who'd come ashore from a sortie out at Bajo de Masinloc, or Kulumpol ng Panatag [Scarborough Shoal] reported cheerfully that they were able to catch a lot of fish this week – with NO HARASSMENT from the Chinese Coast Guard.

According to the one of the fishermen, it seemed like the Chinese had suddenly become nice to them. Coincidentally, they reported the sudden refreshing change in the Chinese side's demeanor after incoming president Rodrigo Duterte talked to the Chinese ambassador last May 16.

Beijing envoy lauds Duterte 'concern for poor' Pinoy fishermen, looks forward to bilaterals
By: InterAksyon.com | With Carla Lim, News5

MANILA - Days after the Chinese coast guard was reported easing up on Filipino fishermen affected by Beijing's "occupation" of Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal, Ambassador Zhao Jianhua gave journalists a glimpse of his government's hopes for a "better" relationship with the Philippines as a new president takes office June 30.

Ambassador Zhao said his confidence "that the relationship will get better" is based on his one-on-one with incoming president Rodrigo Duterte last May 16 in Davao City, where Duterte is winding down work as mayor while preparing to be the first president from Mindanao.

and how do we have chance of winning when even something commonsense as installing removable SSMs and SAMs on our current warships was not done. installing anti-ship missiles on current air assets was not done. Acquiring coastal missile batteries was not done. acquiring unguided rockets for the A109s of the navy is being done instead of at the very least laser-guided rockets, etc . All i mentioned was very doable with the available budget. instead we have a ponderous modernization program that is proceeding as if we are in a peacetime situation.to be specific we are not acquiring what is needed right right now till the tail end of horizon 2 and into horizon 3, and that is assuming it will happen. the bully knows very well our capabilities, so it is just commonsense that they can do what they want to do in the west philippine sea when we do not have even a single guided missile. Worsening the situation is our officials who keep saying we will not go to war - that is like showing your opposing poker player what your cards are. in other words, the bully is certain of the outcome of their actions, they do not have to worry about uncertainty of our reaction or counter-action because we have laid it out for them on a silver platter. simply put, they are terrible poker players.

except from article:
Aquino said sending the navy to counter China is also morally wrong considering the state of the Philippine military – one of the weakest in Asia. China is a military superpower determined to challenge US military dominance in the West Philippine Sea.

In finding the appropriate response, the Aquino administration instead brought the dispute to the international arena and asked the global community to pressure China to adhere to international law. (READ: G7 says 'concerned' by situation in East, South China Sea)

"Ano ba dapat ang ginawa natin diyan (What should we do in that situation)? Engage in hostilities? If we engage in hostilities there, can we win? O ‘di obviously hindi (Obviously, we won't). Pero (But) even in that aspect, are we endangering lives unnecessarily?," Aquino said.

"Iyong maski papasukan natin ‘yung (Even if we consider the) moral dimension, I think it was St Thomas Aquinas who talked about 'just war.' And part of his treatise was: if you engage in war, there has to be that possibility of winning. Kapag guaranteed na hindi (If it is a guaranteed defeat), ‘di ba, that was one of the tenets, tapos may (then there is) exhaustion of all means," he added.

China welcomes PHL offer for South China Sea talks
Published June 1, 2016 6:57pm

BEIJING - China's said on Wednesday it welcomed a proposal by the incoming Philippine government for bilateral talks on the disputed South China Sea.

China claims almost the whole of the South China Sea while the Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, Malaysia and Taiwan have overlapping claims. The sea is rich in oil, gas and fish, and trade worth trillions of dollars passes through it each year.

The Philippines refers to parts of the South China Sea as West Philippine Sea.

China says PHL ignoring maritime talks proposal
Published June 8, 2016 10:34am
Updated June 8, 2016 11:07am

BEIJING - China said on Wednesday the Philippines has ignored a proposal for a regular talks mechanism over maritime issues, as it repeated that its door was always open to bilateral talks with Manila on the South China Sea.

China claims most of the waters, through which $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei have overlapping claims, as well as close military ties with the United States.

Chinese envoy: 'No dispute we can't resolve'
By: Ma. Cristina C. Arayata, Philippine News Agency
June 11, 2016 3:09 PM

MANILA - "As long as we treat each other with sincerity, follow the spirit of seeking common ground while shelving differences, there is no obstacle that we cannot surmount, nor dispute that we cannot resolve."

Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua highlighted this point during the 41st anniversary of the establishment of China-Philippines Diplomatic Relations and the 15th Filipino-Chinese Friendship Day.

Zhao said the Chinese government hopes that the incoming Duterte administration could work with them towards the same direction, deal with relevant issues, put differences under control, and bring the bilateral relations back to a sound and comprehensive development.
