Philippine leader likens China to Nazi Germany
3 Jun 2015 at 13:45
WRITER: AFP

TOKYO - Philippine President Benigno Aquino drew a parallel Wednesday between present day China and Nazi Germany during a speech in Japan, hinting the world cannot continue to appease Beijing as it claims ever-more territory in the South China Sea.

"If there was a vacuum, if the United States, which is the superpower, says 'we are not interested', perhaps there is no brake to ambitions of other countries. I'm an amateur student of history and I'm reminded of... how Germany was testing the waters and what the response was by various other European powers. They tested the waters and they were ready to back down if for instance in that aspect, France said (to back down). But unfortunately, up to the annexation of the Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia, the annexation of the entire country of Czechoslovakia, nobody said stop. If somebody said stop to (Adolf) Hitler at that point in time, or to Germany at that time, would we have avoided World War II."

- Philippine President Benigno Aquino, in a speech at the "Future of Asia" forum in Tokyo on June 3, 2015

China shocked by Aquino's Nazi Germany comparison
06/03/2015
Reuters

BEIJING - China said on Wednesday that it was shocked by Philippine President Benigno Aquino's comparison between Chinese activities in the South China Sea and Nazi Germany's expansionism, calling it "absurd" and "unreasonable".

Recalling documentaries on Germany's expansionism before the war, Aquino added: "If somebody said stop to (Adolf) Hitler at that point in time, or to Germany at that time, could we have avoided World War Two?"

"The Chinese government's resolution and will to safeguard national sovereignty and maritime rights and interests is firm and unshakable. I once more seriously warn certain people in the Philippines to cast aside their illusions and repent, stop provocations and instigation, and return to the correct path of using bilateral channels to talk and resolve this dispute."

- Hua Chunying, Chinese Foreign ministry spokeswoman

MANILA (UPDATED) - The Philippines' dispute with China over the West Philippine Sea has affected the annual celebration of the country's biggest organization of Chinese-Filipino businessmen of Filipino-Chinese Friendship Day and the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Philippine-China diplomatic relations.

The Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII) decided to drop the twin events from what was supposed to be a "three-in-one" commemoration of the important milestones, including the 117th Philippine Independence Day, at the PICC Monday night.

China's sea reclamation issue dominates ARF meeting

By Siti Rahil, Kyodo News

KUCHING - China's controversial reclamation activities in disputed waters of the West Philippine Sea (South China) Sea and efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula dominated a meeting of senior officials of the ASEAN Regional Forum on Wednesday, officials said after the meeting.

"The issue of the situation in the South China Sea was discussed at length by all participants," Shahrul Ikram Yaakob said after a meeting here of senior officials from more than 20 member countries of the ARF, a multilateral, intergovernmental meeting on regional security.

China says Manila trying to 'rope in' others to sea dispute

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's military on Thursday accused the Philippines of trying to "rope in" other countries to the dispute over ownership of the South China Sea and stir regional tension after Japan joined a military drill with the Philippines.

According to Japanese and Philippine officials, a Japanese surveillance aircraft, with three Filipino guest crew members, this week flew at 5,000 feet (1,524 m) above the edge of Reed Bank, an energy-rich area that is claimed by both China and the Philippines. It was accompanied by a smaller Philippine patrol aircraft.

Chinese Defence Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun, asked about the exercises, said that bilateral military cooperation between countries should benefit regional peace and security and not harm the interests of third parties.

China says changing position on sea dispute would shame ancestors

BEIJING - BY BEN BLANCHARD

"One thousand years ago China was a large sea-faring nation. So of course China was the first country to discover, use and administer the Nansha Islands. China's demands of sovereignty over the Nansha Islands have not expanded and neither will they shrink. Otherwise we would not be able to face our forefathers and ancestors. China could not face its children and grandchildren if the gradual and incremental invasion of China's sovereignty and encroachment on China's interests. Other countries only started occupying Chinese territory from the 1960s after oil was discovered. China is in reality the biggest victim."

- Wang Yi, Chinese Foreign Minister

Reuters

Did anyone point out to him that their absurd rationalisation is already shaming their ancestors? - Not that I understand how the dead are capable of being ashamed - taking to the fact that they are already dead.

The Filipino media man who followed his heart to China
27 Jun 2015
Marga Ortigas

Beijing, China - It was a rather unusual trajectory. Rhio Zablan went from working in the Philippine president's press office to ... "the other side".
At least that's how many Filipinos would see it in these times of frayed relations between the Philippines and China.

Zablan now works for the Chinese government: propagating Chinese views and culture, in Filipino, for the state-run China Radio International (CRI).

"There are misconceptions about Chinese media," he said casually. "We want to disprove that people think Chinese media is just a propaganda machine - no, it's not."

Zablan is aware that he runs the risk of sounding exactly like the "propaganda machine" he is meant to be disproving, but it is easy to sense that he believes what he says. He's a positive person who wants to see the best in things. And China has been good to him.
