China wants PH to vacate Pag-asa island: analyst

MANILA - China is planning to seize control of Pag-asa Island (Thitu Island) in the West Philippine Sea by asking the Philippine government to leave, a local security analyst said Thursday.

Prof. Rommel Banlaoi, head of the Philippine Institute for Peace, Violence and Terrorism Research (PIPVTR), told a Senate hearing that China's reclamation work in the South China Sea is a form of "precision asymmetric warfare" that intends to shut out other claimants in the disputed territories.

He said Pag-asa Island is outside the Philippines' exclusive economic zone (EEZ) but is part of the Kalayaan group of islands. "This is one reason why China is doing reclamation work in the area," he said.

Gazmin: China won't go to war over small islands

MANILA - The Philippines expressed alarm Thursday over what it said were escalating Chinese efforts to drive off Filipino aircraft from a disputed South China Sea island garrisoned by Manila, in dangerous confrontations.

Rear Admiral Alexander Lopez said seven Filipino patrol planes on separate flights between Thitu island and Chinese-held Subi Reef in the Spratly Islands had been warned to stay away in radio messages from Chinese forces on Subi.

"Recently this area has been the source of air challenges to our aircraft landing and departing from Pagasa island," he told a hearing of the senate national defence committee, using the Filipino name for the Philippine-garrisoned Thitu.

Baka ibig sabihin ni Mr. sec. gazmin talaga eh, "PH won't go to war over small Islands!" :lollol:

^The weakest and least clever defense chief, even how he conducts his speeches, comments etc. "binabasa na nga niya script niya eh, nabubulol pa..." :lollol:

^^That Harry Roque guy should tag along, to be forcibly shipped together on the next replenishment mission to Pag-asa Island, for him to see and feel for himself, what really is happening in real time.

Mahina talaga kokote ni AFPC Catapang, sayang yung surname niya, di bagay sa kanya.. Dapat sinagot niya at binara niya on the spot si Roque.

Yes, we are applying and going by the law with regards to our territorial claims n disputes with China, but are they acknowleging the validity of any legal such thing that we do? Even if the law is on our side, who will be the first to enforce this law?

Our moves/ plans to use and apply legal approach in dealing with territorial issues should be backed up by the AFP Modernization plans, including emergency purchasing plans to set up an emergency task force, to specifically deal with these issues from day 1 of the Panatag stand off.. BUT, why only now..? When China's almost done with their dirty plans in WPS, is this another set up show, just to show the Filipino people that this Administration is doing everything it can with these issues..?? Same like the AFPM kuno(?) Looks and sounds like it... :dunno:

China's Coming 'Lawfare' and the South China Sea
What China’s growing legal expertise could mean for its foreign policy.

One area where policy wonks will have to carefully monitor how China employs this newly gained expertise is the law of the sea. While China has both signed and ratified the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), it has recently made use of its right not to join in international arbitration efforts brought forward by the Philippines and Vietnam regarding the conflicting territorial claims in the South China Sea. Several analysts have criticized China for not making use of the legal means and instead insisting on bilateral dispute resolution while reclaiming land and building dual-use facilities in the South China Sea. This could potentially change if China uses the new expertise to put more emphasis on legal means.

China pursuing huge West PH Sea land reclamation: US

by Dan De Luce, Agence France-Presse
Posted at 05/09/2015 9:50 PM | Updated as of 05/09/2015 9:51 PM
WASHINGTON -- China has dramatically ramped up its land reclamation efforts in the South China Sea this year, building artificial islands at an unprecedented pace to bolster its territorial claims in the disputed area, US officials said Friday.

The rapid construction of artificial islands in the strategic waters comes to 2,000 acres (800 hectares), with 75 percent of the total in the last five months, officials said.

DFA: PH case vs China is strong

ABS-CBNnews.com

MANILA – Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) spokesperson Charles Jose said the Philippines' case against China over the South China Sea issue is strong.

Speaking to dzMM, Jose said the case of the Philippines against China in a United Nations-backed arbitral tribunal is strong despite efforts by China to change the facts on the ground by doing massive reclamation activities.

"Confident kami na mananalo tayo sa question ng jurisdiction at merits of the case,'' Jose told dzMM.

^^ Yes it is.

But how is it going to be enforced, and by who? An insurmountable task lies ahead.

I agree with you Hong!

Imo, This is the reason why I keep saying that everything that the present PH Govt. is doing are all pointless with regards to PH/ China territorial disputes, starting from passive approach on China's intrusions, aggressiveness, the AFP Modernization etc,. especially the UNCLOS ITLOS case filed to UN.

Given that the PH AFP Modernization was already behind since 1995, and that our AFP's external defense capabilities are considered close to nil, compared to our neighbors armed forces.
What the Aquino Govt. should have done in the first place, if they really care and are sincere in fighting for our Country's territories, rights and sovereignty of the nation, was to make the AFP Modernization as the no.1 priority, they should have alloted a minimum of P100B. Pesos = $2.2+ B. USD as the first initial.

At present, yes, P75 B. Pesos was alloted, but after this was approved since from day one, the only big ticket purchase that they've accomplished that can help deter China's aggressive acts in WPS was the FA-50' Jets from SK and all the rest seems to be are all in a very slow motion pace and most are still under study, evaluation process etc. "kung baga eh very obvious na naka FREEZE da Ball mode...?" Like waiting for China to finish their illegal reclamation projects in WPS. Lol!
"Compromised from day 1 since 2010"

AFP Mod + ITLOS case = takes 2 to tango

Can they blame anybody for thinking like this? :dunno:

Expert: PH has moral victory but pushed China to the wall

There's no turning back from China's massive reclamation work in the West Philippine Sea.

International security analyst, Professor Rommel Banlaoi says it's unlikely that China will change its mind and cooperate, even if the Philippines wins its arbitration case before the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea to resolve the territorial row with China.

He adds, the challenge is for the country make the most of any advantage it has in filing the case.

Salud!!

I believe the onus should be now be passed to both your upper and lower houses. Do allow me to explain.

- You've got a president (no matter who it is) which has a single term for 6 years... No guarantee of continuity especially when the "Game of Politics" rears its ugly head. And when you actually have one who does care for your armed forces... He has to deal with the "clowns" in both houses just to get the budget allocation for it.

- While you've got upper and lower house members who have been in the same positions (either by political dynasties and various affiliations) for decades. Perhaps you should elect house members who have the military close to their hearts. So, they can "wrangle in" a president who does nothing while lobbying their party mates / cohorts for more funds.

Of course it all depends if they are honest enough to keep their hands off on all that money.

If nothing changes... I hate to say it and I do apologise for saying that you are pretty much screwed.
