What will we gain from obtaining Malaysian support in the UN against China?

Let us not forget that China is nuclear armed, veto wielding member of the Security Council. I doubt if Malaysia will support us in this issue with China.

Let us not forget that Malaysia is also a claimant in the Spartly Islands and according to this article that Andres Boning has posted:

Quote:

There are some parts in the Spratlys where the 200 NM Exclusive Economic Zones of the Philippines and Malaysia overlap.
We shall not fail or falter; we shall not weaken or tire...Give us the tools and we will finish the job.
Sir Winston Churchill, BBC radio broadcast, 1941

We'll settle this the old navy way: first guy to die, loses.

Fiery Cross Reef will be China's main base in the Spratlys

From a small outpost measuring 1,032 square meters, Kagitingan Reef’s reclaimed land area is now 90,000 square meters. One side of the island is three kilometers long and 300 meters wide: large enough for a runway, support roads and apron. China’s building of an airstrip at Fiery Cross Reef is seen as a major development as they are the only claimant with no permanent airfield in the disputed area.

Apart from the airstrip, another major feature of Fiery Cross Reef is the construction of a harbor that is estimated to be large enough to handle major surface warships, tankers and even possibly, submarines.

Airbus Defence and Space imagery shows changes to Fiery Cross Reef observed between February and March 2015.
Noteworthy is the beginning of airfield installation in March, and the relocation of some dredging activity out of the harbour.

Airbus imagery taken of Subi Reef – also in the Spratlys – on 6 February and 5 March shows land reclamation on this site too. The 6 February image shows three islands being created. By 5 March, at least nine dredgers are creating larger landmasses on the reef that if joined together could create enough land for another 3,000 m-long airstrip.

While Fiery Cross Reef is to the west of the Spratly Islands archipelago, Subi Reef is on the north side of the island group and is only 25 km from Thitu / Pagasa island, which is occupied by the Philippines and has a civilian population.

G7 foreign ministers hit China reclamation
Apr 17, 2015 - Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – In a statement hailed by the Philippines, foreign ministers from the world's 7 most industrialized countries slammed China's artificial islands in the disputed South China Sea.

"We continue to observe the situation in the East and South China Seas and are concerned by any unilateral actions, such as large-scale land reclamation, which change the status quo and increase tensions," the G7 foreign ministers said in a statement Wednesday, April 15. They said: "We strongly oppose any attempt to assert territorial or maritime claims through the use of intimidation, coercion, or force.

The declaration was signed by foreign ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as the High Representative of the European Union.

Philippines says South China Sea dispute a global problem | Reuters - Yahoo! News
Quote:

MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine President Benigno Aquino said on Friday the territorial dispute with China in the South China Sea was of concern for the world because global trade will be hit by China's reclamation.

<snipped>

"We keep asserting the problem in the South China Sea is not a regional problem," Aquino told journalists. "This is a problem of the whole world because 40 percent of global trade pass through these waters. Global leaders have already expressed their concern on this problem."

China claims most of the potentially energy-rich South China Sea, through which $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year, and denies accusations its actions in its own territory are provocative.

Images show rapid Chinese progress on new South China Sea airstrip

By David Brunnstrom

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Recent satellite images published on Thursday show China has made rapid progress in building an airstrip suitable for military use in contested territory in the South China Sea's Spratly Islands and may be planning another, moves that have been greeted with concern in the United States and Asia.

IHS Jane's Defense Weekly said March 23 images from Airbus Defence and Space showed work on the runway on reclaimed parts of Fiery Cross Reef in the Spratly archipelago, which China contests with the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan.

MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino welcomed yesterday the Group of Seven industrialized countries’ expression of concern over rising tension in the West Philippine Sea and South China Sea, calling it a clear indication of the global scope of the problem ramped up by China’s massive reclamation activities in disputed waters.

In Tarlac City where he led the turnover of new classrooms, Aquino told reporters that goodwill and not tension must prevail in the West Philippine Sea and South China Sea, where territorial disputes have bred new alliances and strengthened existing ones with the United States.

Don't they mean the Chinese Embassy? It's only a consulate if it's a foreign diplomatic post in a city that's not the capital city.

“It might indeed be best to convene the NSC in order to bring everybody in the loop given that this is an issue facing our country and people regardless of political affiliation," Escudero said in a press statement.

The NSC is chaired by President. Under Executive Order No. 115, the NSC is the principal advisory body of the President on matters affecting national security.

The other members of the NSC are the Vice President, the Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff, the NSC director-general, the executive secretary, and the secretaries of foreign affairs, national defense, interior and local government, justice, and labor and employment.

The senator said it is imperative that the government bring the issue to the proper forum through diplomatic means. He said getting attention and support from the United States and regional partners in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will play an important role in keeping China at bay.
