it looks like the latest bully map does not include the natunas islands of indonesia ?? it looks like they backed off indonesia after the indonesians huffed and puffed recently over the natunas islands. I bet the purpose is to make indonesia neutral and they hope indonesia will try to persuade the philippines to try 'negotiations' but then indonesia will not have credibility to preach pease/negotiations since its in their interest for war not to erupt because anyway, natunas islands is not included in the bully's 9-dash line(if my assumption is true) can anyone verify from this latest map is natunas islands are indeed not included by the bully?

malaysia has a big chinese minority population that is economically powerful, but which the native malays have been discriminating against so this may be a factor in malaysia's meek behavior.

I've checked previous "9-dash" and "10-dash" maps and it's the same. The Natuna island is not part of it.

The Malaysians may have already accepted China's "historical claim", that's why China is urging the same acceptance from PH and Japan...

Malaysia, China Keep Low Profile on Conflicting Sea Claims
By Eric Yep And Simon Hall

The China-Malaysia relationship is being maintained despite China's increasing assertiveness, including in waters claimed by Malaysia. Experts say this is due to a combination of the countries' greater distance from each other and strong economic ties.

"Malaysia and China have disputes in the South China Sea. But the two sides share broad consensus on appropriately handling the disputed issues," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement to The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday.

For its part, the Malaysian government is sticking with a policy of saying little either about China's military flexing or any dispute with its largest trading partner. The Malaysian government didn't respond to requests for comment on Tuesday.

"Both Malaysia and Brunei have tended to play down tensions in the South China Sea, and unlike Vietnam and the Philippines, the dispute does not overshadow their relations with China," said Ian Storey, senior fellow at the Singapore-based Institute of Southeast Asian Studies.

China was Malaysia's largest trading partner for the fifth consecutive year in 2013, with two-way trade that year valued at $62 billion, according to data from Malaysia's Ministry of International Trade.

China and Malaysia have deep energy ties: Malaysia is the third-largest supplier of liquefied natural gas to China. And in April, state-owned China Petroleum & Chemical Corp., or Sinopec, agreed to join a Petronas-led project in Canada, known as Pacific Northwest LNG, as a minority partner.

However, China has been stepping up its military presence in Malaysia's corner of the South China Sea. In January, a Chinese naval flotilla conducted a patrol of the Paracel Islands, claimed by China and Vietnam, before proceeding to the James Shoal, a reef some 80 kilometers off Malaysia's coast in areas claimed by both China and Malaysia.

It then proceeded beyond waters claimed by Beijing to the Indian Ocean, where it conducted the first exercises by Chinese military vessels in waters south of Indonesia. In all, the ships spent 23 days at sea.

Also, according to IHS ship-tracking data, the Chinese research vessel Zhong Guo Hai Jian-23, which is currently off Vietnam, was sailing off Sarawak three months ago, after which it showed up near the disputed Mischief Reef, north of Palawan in the Philippines, where China has been conducting building work.

That has led to questions among experts whether the status quo in the southern part of the South China Sea is under pressure.

"Malaysia may have to recalibrate its South China Sea policy," Dr. Storey said. He added, "Perhaps sooner rather than later Malaysia may have to take a tougher line against Beijing."

well, that helps explain indonesia's attitude towards the bully claims - not as strident as the philipines and japan. After all, each country have their core interests.

After release of 'expansive' map, PH told to brace for China's more aggressive intrusion
By: Lira Dalangin-Fernandez, InterAksyon.com

MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippines should brace for more aggressive intrusion into its waters by China's navy after the country's publication of a new map covering broader territorial claims over South China Sea, a former lawmaker and national security adviser said Thursday.

"The Chinese navy may be preparing to violate in depth our Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) with the new China 10-dash line," former Parañaque representative Roilo Golez said.

"We face the danger of the Chinese navy (PLAN) patrolling our seas well within our EEZ and getting close to our territorial sea, with the Chinese navy commanders citing the newly minted map as their authority for violating in depth our EEZ," Golez said.

No offense but ASEAN is a "toothless tiger" for now. You've got a lot of "fence sitters" and a 3 more in the other side of the fence - firmly in China's grip and looking to their own agendas.

Which is why I believe you have to look outside these 10 nations. China is just using ASEAN as a "vehicle" for delaying/stalling everything. Even if by some miracle they get things done like issuing a moratorium or a DOC... there is no assurance if China will sign it or even abide by it.

UNCLOS, (serious) armed forces modernization, and exploring the possibility of a regional alliance is where the onus should be on.

That is why the US, Japan, Australia, and S. Korea are helping us on this matter (plus more nations in the EU)... only Vietnam is kicking China's butt among the ASEAN nation.

Although Vietnam tries to challenge China through military and/or para-military confrontation (albeit can only do so much), but the PH diplomatic strategy is also getting a lot of grounds and even gave PH much needed alliances from other concerned nations. We should notice this on China's comments and statements regarding the PH. It seemed that damaging their international image hurts more than water hoses and ship ramming...
