Humanitarian mission planned for Kalayaan islands
By Alexis Romero, The Philippine Star
06/18/2014 3:21 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Amid rising tensions in the West Philippine Sea, a group of civilians and soldiers will hold a humanitarian mission in the Kalayaan Island Group next month, a military official said yesterday.

The mission aims to provide assistance to local residents and to support troops securing the country's remote islands.

"They are planning to conduct a humanitarian mission in the Kalayaan Island Group and they are now in the process of gathering cash and in kind donations from different people and organizations around the world. Among the recipients of the project are our own soldiers. The military needs to get the approval of the defense department before pushing through with the mission. The donors are enthusiastic and willing to provide assistance. They also want to show appreciation to soldiers who are defending our territory. It's for humanitarian reasons. It's not an act of war. It's not offensive. It's not a violation of the UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) and the Declaration of the Code of Conduct."

- Lt. Col. Harold Cabunoc, chief of the Armed Forces 7th Relations Group

Donors can send a message to the Facebook pages "Major Harold Magallanes Cabunoc" and "Kawal Pinoy." They can also call the Armed Forces 7th Civil Relations Group at 937-9437.

Ahead of PNoy visit to Tokyo, PH thanks Japan for backing arbitration case vs China
By: Philippines News Agency
June 23, 2014 7:39 PM

MANILA - The Philippines has expressed its gratitude to Japan for supporting the case it has filed at the international arbitral tribunal to peacefully resolve its maritime dispute with China.

“We are grateful to Japan for supporting the fundamental principle by which the Philippines is addressing the West Philippine Sea issue," Charge d' Affaires of the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo Gilberto G.B. Asuque told Radio TV Malacanang in a recent interview.

The expression of thanks preceded the one-day working visit to Japan on Tuesday (June 24) of President Benigno S. Aquino III, who will have a luncheon meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to discuss the two countries’ respective maritime disputes with China, as well as how to enhance their bilateral relations.

PH becoming a thorn in China’s side
By Nikko Dizon

Magdalo Rep. Francisco Ashley Acedillo said the Philippines’ geographic location is in the way of China’s defense strategy in the Asia-Pacific region, giving its ally, the United States, a base from which to counter China.

“Our strategic location has an impact on China’s establishment of its nine-dash line and any strategy to counter China will always factor in the Philippines,” Acedillo said in a recent interview, referencing China’s claim to 90 percent of the South China Sea.

“From the point of view of China’s strategy, we are the biggest thorn in its side because our location gives any [allied] country the upper hand in deterring the move of China toward the Pacific and we are getting in the way of [China’s] intentions,” Acedillo said.

China unveils 'unreasonably expansive' map that includes areas within PH
By: Philippine News Agency
June 25, 2014 9:14 PM

MANILA, Philippines –- The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Wednesday called China’s new official map “unreasonably expansive” as it includes areas within Philippine sovereignty as part of Chinese territory.

"We reiterate that such a publication only shows China's unreasonably expansive claim that is clearly contrary to international law and United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,” DFA spokesman Charles Jose said in a statement.

China's foreign ministry said people should not read too much into the issuing of the new map.

"The goal is to serve the Chinese public. As for the intentions, I think there is no need to make too much of any association here. China's position on the South China Sea issue is consistent and extremely clear. Our stance has not changed."

- Hua Chunying, Chinese foreign ministry loudspeaker

China says Philippines stirring tensions after Aquino supports Japan [interaksyon] - June 26, 2014
Quote:

China's foreign ministry said Aquino's statement had complicated an already difficult situation.

"We think that the relevant country should earnestly show its sincerity, meet China halfway, rather than creating tensions and rivalry and adding new, complicating factors to the situation in the region," spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a daily news briefing.

Hua urged Manila to "play a positive and constructive role" for peace and stability, "rather than the reverse".

Foreign Affairs Spokesman Charles Jose said the publication of the new map only shows China's "unreasonably expansive claim" of territories in the South China Sea that is contrary to international law.

"We should take note that no other country recognizes previously China's nine-dash claim. Publishing a new map does not make the territories that they claim theirs," he said in an ANC interview.

"It is precisely such ambitious expansionism that is causing tensions in the South China Sea," he added.

China publishes new map
Matikas Santos
Philippine Daily Inquirer/Asia News Network
Thursday, Jun 26, 2014

China's latest published map shows its claim over the South China Sea by marking 10 dash lines around the region.

The map shows China's claim over the South China Sea by marking ten dash lines around the region just off the coasts of Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and the Philippines' islands of Palawan and Luzon.

Several reclamation activities on reefs in the Spratly Islands are being conducted by China as shown by a series of aerial photographs of Mabini reef (Johnson South Reef) released by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

The reclamation is regarded as China's way of furthering its "expansionist agenda" in the region, Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario said in previous media interviews.
