take note i stated wanabe frigates and mrfs. what i also missed is that the area denial system supports small vessels in the range of arounf 50m, even though it may not scare china, in a shooting war we have a better chance compared to 2-4 wanabe frigates and 12 wanabe mrfs.

Int'l political group to China: Follow rule of law in South China Sea dispute
March 21, 2014 6:59pm

"History's destructive wars began when democratic nations stood silent in the face of unlawful occupations of other nation's territory, and remembers these lessons to condemn territorial encroachments wherever they occur." - Centrist Democrat International (CDI)

A transnational organization of political groups from 60 countries has called on China to follow the rule of law in resolving the territorial dispute over parts of the South China Sea.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Centrist Democrat International (CDI) unanimously adopted an emergency resolution on March 19 calling on China to "respect its treaty obligations under the UN Charter, Convention on the Law of the Seas (UNCLOS) and generally-accepted principles on international law."

"[CDI] strongly urges China to pursue peaceful, lawful, and internationally-sanctioned rules on dispute resolution to remove rising tensions in the region and seek peaceful rules-based solutions of the conflicting claims," it said.

Obviously Beijing probably won't take this seriously:

The political group Centrist Democrat International, counting members from 60 democracies, has unanimously adopted an emergency resolution on disputes in the South China Sea, urging Beijing “to respect its treaty obligations under the UN Charter, Convention on the Law of the Seas (UNCLOS) and generally accepted principles on international law.”

The issues related to the South China Sea maritime disputes were tackled in a meeting of CDI’s Executive Council on March 19 in Brussels, Belgium. The resolution was proposed by former Senator Edgardo J. Angara, a member of CDI’s Executive Council and Vice President for Asia Pacific.

At least news organizations such as Defense News continue to report on the SCS/WPS situation to the Washington DC beltway's defense community in spite of the rest of the world focusing on the Crimea/Ukraine crisis.

Philippines To Challenge Chinese Blockade
Mar. 22, 2014 - 10:07AM | By WENDELL MINNICK

TAIPEI — With the eyes of the world focused either on the Russian incursion into Ukraine or the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines passenger plane, another drama that normally would be making international headlines is unfolding in the South China Sea.

On March 9, two Chinese Coast Guard cutters blocked two Philippine transport vessels carrying supplies to marines assigned to a corroding World War II-era vessel marooned on the Ayungin Shoal, known as the Renai Shoal to China.

A few days later, the Philippine military was able to resupply the unit by dropping provisions from a fixed-wing BN-2 Islander light utility aircraft, and now is vowing to send resupply vessels to challenge the Chinese Coast Guard blockade, a Philippine Navy official said.

No date was given, but the eight Philippine Marines based there are normally resupplied every month or two.

“As to resupplying our troops stationed in the said shoal, we will continue to do it in any means that we can,” he said.

“We affirm our sovereign rights over this shoal and that of the other islands, reefs and atolls in the Kalayaan Island Group within the framework of the [United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea],” said the Philippine Navy official.

US accuses China of provoking PHL
April 1, 2014 8:29am

WASHINGTON - The United States criticized China as provocative Monday after its coast guard tried to block a Philippine vessel that was rotating troops in the tense West Philippine Sea.

The attempted Chinese blockade, which led to a two-hour standoff with the Philippine ship, is "a provocative and destabilizing action," State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf told reporters.

Harf said that the Philippines had permission to resupply troops to the remote reef, Ayungin Shoal (Second Thomas Shoal), because it has kept a naval presence there since before a 2002 declaration of conduct in the South China Sea.

"As a treaty ally of the Republic of the Philippines, the United States urges China to refrain from further provocative behavior by allowing the Philippines to continue to maintain its presence at Second Thomas Shoal," she said.

China: Manila's arbitration case seriously damages ties
Quote:

"We find it very hard to understand these moves of the Philippines and we are deeply disturbed by and concerned with the consequences of such moves," said Sun Xiangyang, charge d'Affaires of the Chinese embassy in Manila.

"What the Philippine side did seriously damaged bilateral relations with China."

Sun said China would not participate in the legal process because it did not believe the court case would resolve the dispute.

"We hope that the Philippine side will correct its mistake and come back to the right track of resolving the disputes through bilateral negotiations," he said, adding China had not shut the door to negotiations.

Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin told the Philippines' ambassador that China was "extremely dissatisfied and resolutely opposed" to the case, repeating that China did not accept it and would not participate.

"The Philippines forcing of international arbitration is not conducive towards resolving the Sino-Philippine dispute over the South China Sea," the Foreign Ministry cited Liu as saying.

The case would not shake China's resolve to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, Liu added.

"This shows that the reason the Philippines is pushing the international arbitration case is to conceal their plot to illegally occupy Chinese territory and create trouble in the South China Sea," Hong told a daily news briefing.

Hong repeated that China would never allow the Philippines to occupy the shoal, called Ren'ai Reef by the Chinese, or build infrastructure there.

"The Philippine side will certainly face consequences for its provocative actions," he said, without elaborating.

- Often happens when you push people around.

"What the Philippine side did seriously damaged bilateral relations with China."
- The relations have already been damaged.

Sun said China would not participate in the legal process because it did not believe the court case would resolve the dispute.
- Court cases resolve a lot of disputes. - At least in the outside world.

"We hope that the Philippine side will correct its mistake and come back to the right track of resolving the disputes through bilateral negotiations."
- The only mistake is that they (China) should have used the courts if they so strongly believed in the merits of their claim.

China was "extremely dissatisfied and resolutely opposed" to the case
- As expected when you know you are at the losing end.

The case would not shake China's resolve to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
- But would shake its moral and legal claim.

- A court ruling should determine who is the illegal occupier.

"The Philippine side will certainly face consequences for its provocative actions."
- A court ruling will determine once and for all who did the provocative actions. Pointing fingers now doesn't count.

Words from USA are getting stronger. I just hope actions will come soon.

“As a treaty ally of the Republic of the Philippines, the United States urges China to refrain from further provocative behavior by allowing the Philippines to continue to maintain its presence at Second Thomas Shoal,” she said. “We urge China to manage disputes peacefully, to clarify its ambiguous claim in accordance with international law and to accelerate negotiations with ASEAN on a meaningful code of conduct.”
