Is China Inserting Itself Into the Taiwan-Philippines Spat?
By Zachary Keck
May 24, 2013

Briefing reporters this week, Philippine Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said, “We saw a frigate. We saw CMS (Chinese maritime surveillance) maritime ships. We have pictures and we have sent them to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). Based on [the photos] that I saw yesterday, there were two CMS and one frigate.”

Gazmin added that the presence of a Chinese military ship was “unusual.”

The Department of Foreign Affairs struck an even more defiant tone with a spokesperson from the department declaring, “They should not be there. They do not have the right to be there… no-one should doubt the resolve of the Filipino people to defend what is ours in that area.”

“Our Navy and our Coast Guard are mandated to enforce the laws of the (Philippine) republic,” Raul Hernandez, the spokesperson, added.

The Philippines stations a host of Marines on the Ayungin Shoal which is also called the Second Thomas Shoal. They operate from a WWII-era U.S. tank-landing vessel. Manila has said that its military was not deploying more ships to the area but that an unarmed, resupply ship is in route to replenish the deployed Marines.

Although China and the Philippines have long contested sovereignty of the reefs and shoals in the Spratlys, the timing of the patrols suggest they may have been motivated by the recent spat between the Philippines and Taiwan, which China considers an integral part of China.

In any case, the recent flare-ups with Taiwan and China have clearly rattled the Philippines, which announced on Tuesday that it will spend US$1.8 billion to beef up its defenses in order to “resist bullies” as President Benigno Aquino put it.

the proper mindset and actions of the government should be guided by what is legally allowed under both our laws and international laws, and not emotionally driven(pakiramdaman) by second-guessing what the bully will do or not do nor be constrained by the illegal intimidation or superior power of the bully

The bully wants to get what they can get away with without firing a shot through intimidation. We need to call their bluff while at the same time being ready to bleed for our maritime claims, again within the confines of international law.

Look at how Iceland confronted Great Britain during the Cod Wars of the 1970s using only their fishing trawlers.

Believe me, the last thing the bully wants is to be forced to use violence because not only will it shut down the western pacific shipping lanes, it will piss-off in a very violent way the filipino population and whatever remaining goodwill that bully has with the filipino people will be gone for the next 100 years. Not to mention possible UN sanctions and allies rallying to our side. We will become the maritime version of Palestine in a never-ending maritime conflict.

However, we cannot rely on the assumption that the bully will eventually back-down, and so we need to be ready for a long drawn-out series of back and forth naval fights or battles, and the only way our local economy can sustain that is if we can select the optimum future ship platform that can be repaired/overhauled or replaced after battle damage by the greatest number of local shipyards in the shortest time possible, and of course locally manufacture as much bullets and guns as is cost-efficient and for those larger caliber guns/missiles, we just need to stock up on supplies for them.

In pictures, US Aircraft Carrier "menaces" China's ships in the south China sea

(Infonet.vn) As China and Philippines tensions in the disputed South China Sea at the Second Thomas Reef, the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Nimitz conducted military drills in the area, making China nervous.

- On 21 to 23 May 2013, USS Nimitz had rehearsal time for aircraft taking-off and landing, military drills and supplies in the South China Sea close to the Philippines, the purpose of this exercise was to protect maritime security, support islands defending.

- On May 15, USS Nimitz (CVN 68) of the U.S. Navy 7th Fleet has coordinated joint exercises with fleets of Korea and Japan in the East China Sea. After the completion of this exercise, the journey of the USS Nimitz was quite mysterious.

- On May 22, on the website of the U.S. Navy published a picture showing U.S. Ambassador in Singapore David Adelman presented on USS Nimitz with the notes "East Sea, the aircraft carrier". That means after finishing exercises with South Korea and Japan, U.S. Nimitz was sent to the South China Sea.

- Chinese media analysis that U.S. military is rarely revealed clearly position of USS Nimitz. "Global Times" quoted a Chinese source said: "Americans generally do not want to reveal to others the U.S. military ships' position, particularly in the South China Sea. Moreover, the Philippines and Taiwan are stressed about the Taiwanese fishermen shot dead, China and the Philippines tense at the Second Thomas Reef, then this action can be understood as the U.S. threatened the Chinese ship in the disputed area with the Philippines ".

Withdraw ships, Philippines tells China
By Tarra Quismundo in Manila
Philippine Daily Inquirer | Asia News Network – 8 hours ago

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - China should withdraw its ships from Ayungin Shoal (Second Thomas Reef) because that area of the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) is an "integral part" of the Philippines' national territory, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Monday.

Ayungin lies 196 kilometres from Palawan province, well within the Philippines' 370-km exclusive economic zone (EEZ), Raul Hernandez, spokesman for the DFA, told reporters. "That's why [China should withdraw its ships from] the area and respect the maritime zones of the Philippines."

The Philippines on May 10 protested the presence of a fleet of Chinese fishing boats, accompanied by patrol vessels, at Ayungin, but China has not responded.

Instead of answering the Philippine protest, China insisted that it had "indisputable sovereignty" over Ayungin and other parts of the Spratly archipelago in the middle of the West Philippine Sea.

It's like talking to a brick wall. Perhaps they will start to listen when you get your "collective butts" together and actually start buying ships/aircraft that can actually threaten them.

Philippine official urges China to be 'responsible and positive force'
By Tarra Quismundo in Manila
Philippine Daily Inquirer | Asia News Network – Sun, May 26, 2013

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - Warning that escalating tensions in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) "could lead to conflict," Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario urged China at a foreign policy forum in Tokyo to act responsibly instead of resorting to aggression in the wake of its its rapid rise as an economic and military power in the Asia-Pacific.

"China, as the second biggest economy in the world with a position of primacy in the region, is very important to the security and prosperity equation in Asia. We must all support China's peaceful rise and hope that China will firmly pursue the track of being a responsible power and a positive force," Del Rosario said.

"Being a responsible power, however, is not without its challenges. The competing territorial and maritime disputes are causing considerable tension that could lead to conflict," he said at the 19th Nikkei Future of Asia Conference, considered the region's premier foreign policy forum gathering Asian ministers and other officials at the Japanese capital on Thursday.

They probably will in about 4 years. As for now... I don't think so.

Phl won't send ships to Ayungin Shoal

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippinesis still refraining from sending a vessel to the disputed Ayungin Shoal off Palawan where Chinese ships were previously sighted, a Palace official said Tuesday.

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte reiterated that the government chose to address the issue in a diplomatic manner.

"As mentioned to me by the President, we have deliberately chosen not to respond to provocative statements or actions given that we have already chosen the path of peaceful resolution and exhausting diplomatic means to do so," Valte said.

Has PNoy smoked a lot of weed this month? Diplomatic protests won't do good against China. You need to defend your territory! No apologies, we will not back down!
If you don't want a modern and capable AFP, you might want to get the f*ck off the Philippines because you don't deserve to be a Filipino that's why!

South China Sea Tension Mounts Near Filipino Shipwreck

Soldiers are equipped with a small generator for cooking. Radios are battery-powered and supplies are delivered by boat. "They want us out of the area," another Philippine navy officer said of China."There is now a quiet agreement among different Chinese voices that sometimes you have to act as well as issuing statements," he said. China would, however, never completely close the door on possible co-operation.

Ian Storey, a scholar at Singapore's Institute of South East Asian Studies, said tension at Second Thomas Shoal could prove more dangerous than last year's stand-off at unoccupied Scarborough Shoal, given the presence of Filipino troops."It is hard to imagine China using force to gain full control over Second Thomas, but some kind of blockade to drive out the Philippines' troops would have to be a possibility," Storey said. "There is a real chance of escalation or miscalculation."
