Philippines Sea Patrols to Check on China Naval Exercises

http://www.asianewsnet.net/Philippine-sea-patrols-to-check-on-China-naval-exe-44378.html

Publication Date : 22-03-2013

Philippine naval security forces are set to conduct “sovereignty patrols” in the West Philippines Sea (South China Sea) to check on possible intrusions by Chinese vessels conducting naval exercises within the country’s maritime boundaries, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said yesterday.

DFA spokesman Assistant Secretary Raul Hernandez said the Philippine Navy and Philippine Coast Guard were sailing to waters in disputed areas within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone and continental shelf to check on the presence of Chinese navy ships.
Come to find out they are doing their naval drills in the Bashi Channel, an international passage channel.

China runs naval drills off PH shores

Maybe they are surveying how to overcome the choke points if a war breaks out. Maybe we can put some of the AN/TPS-79 mobile radars we ordered close to the Itbayat Island, our Northern-most inhabited island and monitor anyone passing by including these Chicoms playing war games in the Bashi Channel. From Itbayat to the Southern most tip of Taiwan is 200 km. The AN/TPS-79 radar has primary surveillance radar coverage (noncooperative targets) is out to 60 nautical miles and the secondary surveillance radar coverage (cooperative targets) is out to 120 NM. Our farthest island, Y'Ami, is uninhabited.

This should wake up Malaysia and Brunei. These Chicoms are exercising just 80 miles away right in front of Sarawak. Such an insult! Time to unite the Malay nations, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines.

PLA Navy amphibious task force reaches Malaysia 'to defend South China sea'

Posted Image

A fully equipped PLA amphibious task force has reached China's southernmost claimed possession in the South China Sea in an unprecedented show of force that is raising eyebrows across the region.

The four-ship flotilla headed by the landing ship Jinggangshan visited James Shoal - some 80 kilometres from Malaysia, less than 200 kilometres from Brunei and 1,800 kilometres from the mainland coast - close to the outer limits of China's "nine-dash line", by which it lays claim to virtually the entire South China Sea.

A Xinhua report yesterday described marines and crew gathering on the deck of the Jinggangshan - one of the PLA Navy's three 200-metre landing ships - to pledge to "defend the South China Sea, maintain national sovereignty and strive towards the dream of a strong China".

"It was a surprisingly strong message in sending out this task force, on such a new operational role from previous PLAN [PLA Navy] patrols in the region," said Gary Li, a senior analyst with IHS Fairplay in London.

"It is not just a few ships here and there, but a crack amphibious landing ship carrying marines and hovercraft and backed by some of the best escort ships in the PLAN fleet," he said, adding that jet fighters had also been used to cover the task force.

"We've never seen anything like this that far south in terms of quantity or quality ... it is hard to know whether it is just coincidence, but it does seem to reflect [President] Xi Jinping's desire for more practical operationally based exercises."

The landing ships are considered some of the most sophisticated vessels in the PLA and are thought to be key to any strategy to invade Taiwan. Their deployments are closely watched by regional rivals. The first of the landing ships, Kunlunshan, has been used in anti-piracy work off the Horn of Africa.

Photos circulating on mainland websites show marines storming beaches, backed by hovercrafts and helicopters dispatched from the Jinggangshan during several days of exercises that saw them visit all of China's holdings in the Spratly Islands.

The PLA took six Spratlys reefs and shoals from Vietnam in a sea battle 25 years ago this month.

The ships are due to head back north, crossing into the western Pacific for further drills via the Bashi channel between Taiwan and the Philippines, Xinhua said.

News of the Jinggangshan's appearance off James Shoal last night sparked chatter among military officials in the region.

"That is quite a show of sovereignty - an amphibious task force," said one military attaché monitoring developments. "It has got everyone talking.

The Spratlys is one thing, but turning up at James Shoal is quite another. Once again, China is showing it is quite unafraid to send a message to the region
"The Spratlys is one thing, but turning up at James Shoal is quite another. Once again, China is showing it is quite unafraid to send a message to the region - and in a year when Asean is chaired by Brunei, turning up down there in such a fashion is pretty strong symbolism."

PLA deployments into the South China Sea in 2009 and 2010 sparked fears across the region of a new assertiveness by Beijing. Those concerns in turn prompted fresh moves by several Southeast Asian nations to force the long-simmering South China Sea dispute back on to the regional agenda - and forge closer ties with the US.

Nokor may be in too much in desperation that it may start a war with Sokor. When all the news is focused on some new war, China sneaks in for another takeover somewhere. The AFP should be in full alert, ready to repel a Chink takeover of an island or islands somewhere that belongs to the Phil.

Let's hope this never happens.

It could also be just a diversionary to keep the Americans, Japanese and Koreans tied up with North Korea while the Chinkcoms go hunting for some islands to steal. Imagine James Shoal is 22 meters below water and they are staking their claim that it is theirs.
This is precisely the point why the PH filed their complaint with UNCLOS. How can you claim that is yours when it cannot even sustain any human habitation?

This Article say it all! Military Analysis

Now that is a big concern on the Reed Bank. We better guard it with everything we've got. Those thieves are out there hunting!

We need to monitor these intruders constantly not necessarily confront them but letting them know that we are around and we are keeping an eye on every movement they have. Our claim should be kept alive and constant.

Source: Chinese fighter jets have reportedly flown over West Philippine Sea thrice last week

Quote:

Chinese fighter jets have reportedly flown over the West Philippine Sea three times a week after a landing ship tank—also from China—intruded into one of the islets of the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG), highly placed military sources told InterAksyon.com.

“The intrusions allegedly happened last week and early this week. Local fishermen who reported the incident claimed the fighter jets were always in tandem,” said the source who was not authorized to speak on the matter.

All the three airspace violations took place at the Kalayaan Island Group, a municipality of Palawan composed of 7 islets and 2 reefs found within the West Philippine Sea. Led by Mayor Eugenio Bito-onon, the area lies within oil-rich Spratly Islands (South China Sea) that China is claiming.

It is also being claimed by Taiwan, Vietnam, Brunei and Malaysia.

The source said it was not clear if the Russian-made multirole fighter jets were part of the Chinese naval drill that was slated recently in the South China Sea and “deliberately” flown over KIG.

Arevalo said the sightings were affirmed by Commodore Joseph Rustom Pena, commander of the Naval Forces West based in Puerto Princesa City, in his report to Flag-Officer-in-Command Vice Admiral Jose Luis Alano.

The aircraft, which "headed north coming from the southwest direction," were spotted on Thursday, April 4, at 9:50 a.m., according to Arevalo. The intrusion happened a day before the opening of the 2013 Balikatan exercises of some 8,000 Filipino and Americam soldiers in Luzon

China slams Philippine bid in UN
Tarra Quismundo in Beijing/Philippine Daily Inquirer
Asia News Network – 21 hours ago

Beijing (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - China on Friday accused the Philippines of trying to legalise its occupation of islands in the disputed West Philippine Sea (South China Sea), repeating that Beijing would never agree to international arbitration.

China's foreign ministry posted a statement on its website on Friday saying the Philippines was attempting to "cover in a cloak of 'legality' its illegal occupation of Chinese islands and reefs."

Beijing called on the Philippines to immediately withdraw all personnel and facilities from the islands that it said the Filipinos were occupying.
Those include five islands in the Spratly archipelago in the West Philippine Sea.

China has returned the Philippine notification of proceedings on the UN arbitral tribunal, rejecting arbitration and asserting "indisputable sovereignty" over the sea.
