China Angers Neighbors with Sea Claims on New Passports

MANILA (Reuters) - The Philippines and Vietnam condemned Chinese passports containing a map of China's disputed maritime claims on Thursday, branding the new design a violation of their sovereignty.

The map means countries disputing the Chinese claims will have to stamp microchip-equipped passports of countless visitors, in effect acquiescing to the Chinese point of view.

4th US destroyer on 'routine' port call in Manila

MANILA, Philippines - The USS Gridley (DDG-101), an Arleigh-Burke Class Destroyer, on Monday arrived for a “routine port call” in Manila, the United States embassy here said.

“This visit will allow the ship to replenish supplies as well as give the crew an opportunity for rest and relaxation,” the embassy said in a statement.

It did not say how long the battleship will stay in the country.

The USS Gridley DDG-101 is part of the US Pacific Fleet and is homeported in San Diego, California. The ship is named for Captain Charles Gridley, Commander of the USS Olympia who was famously told by Admiral George Dewey to “fire when you ready, Gridley” in the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.

The destroyer is the fourth to visit the country this year.

On October 24, USS Cowpens (CG-63) and USS McCampbell (DDG-85) escorted the USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group (CVN-73) to Manila.

Prior to this, the destroyer USS Milius visited the country.

Also this year alone, the country was host of the USS Bonehomme Richard, a landing assault ship; submarine tender USS Frank Cable; and four nuclear-powered submarines – USS Olympia (SSN-717), USS North Carolina, USS Hawaii, and USS Louisville (SSN 724).

Visits of different warships of the US Pacific Command (USPACOM) in the country have become frequent this year following the increased military presence of China in connection with the disputed Spratly Islands partly located in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

The Philippines and US has an existing Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) and a separate Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) that allow visits of US warships and troops in the country as well as joint Philippine-US military exercises.

Because of the increasing tension in the West Philippine Sea, the US government said it will increase its presence in the Asia-Pacific to protect its political and economic interest in the region.

The WPS is host of the biggest economic sea lane in the world.

Aside from China and Philippines, the other claimant countries of the oil-rich maritime area are Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brunei.

The Philippines and China have also a separate dispute over the Panatag Shoal, a maritime area located within the territory of Masinloc, Zambales.

If we take a serious look at the latest frequency of USN ships to Manila, Subic and elsewhere in the country, I don't think that they came here for "routine port calls" ONLY!

I am more prone to believe that their visits were NOT just mere coincidence. They have a more profound purpose . . . .

My conclusion is that they were made deliberately to "show the flag", and to be brutally frank about it- is a classic example of gun boat diplomacy in front of our chinky eyed tormentors. That is to show that they are around, similar to the time when three USN Trident nuclear submarines suddenly popped out in three different locations in the region after the SK Cheongsan sinking by a NKorean sub. The US surely made it known to China of their presence.

It sure is reassuring enough for Teaty alliies! But there is no reason to be complacent. There are signs of loosing steam again - the proverbial Filipino trait of ningas kugon. . . the PAF to reexamine their aircraft acquisition, the so called Gazmin counter proposal to the Maestrale sale and the like. Now more than ever, we have a President who is really serious about territorial defense upgrading even himself looking for other sources of funding! Moreover, there are segments in government bureaucracy who dont seem to be on the same page with the President on the word URGENCY!

5 nations support Philippines' position on sea dispute

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - The Philippines got backing from five countries in its position on territorial disputes in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea), a "huge victory" despite China's fresh refusal to commit to a code of conduct in the sea, the Palace said yesterday.

China refused to discuss the territorial disputes during the Asean-China Summit, one of the highest-level meetings during the 21st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit in Phnom Penh that ended on Tuesday.

But four Asean members claiming territories in the disputed sea-Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam-agreed to hold talks in Manila on December 12 to see how they could move forward discussions on their territorial disputes with China.

President Aquino, who on Monday publicly rebuked Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on his statement that Asean leaders had agreed not to "internationalise" the disputes, convinced five other leaders on the wisdom of the Philippine position on the issue.

On the president's intervention, Asean issued a joint communiqu? expressing the 10-nation bloc's desire for a peaceful resolution of the territorial disputes, officials said.

The joint communiqu?, which did not carry Hun Sen's statement, was issued at the close of the Asean-Japan Summit in Phnom Penh on Monday.

Aquino's intervention

In wrapping up Asean's meeting with Japan, Hun Sen, chairman of the Asean Summit and a close ally of China, said the Asean leaders had reached a consensus that the territorial disputes in the West Philippine Sea should not be "internationalised" and that discussions should be confined between the bloc and China.

Aquino intervened, saying no such consensus had been reached.

"For the record, this was not our understanding." Aquino said. "The Asean route is not the only route for us. As a sovereign state, it is our right to defend our national interest."

"We made our stand clear to all parties with sobriety, dignity and reason. In the end, we did not only deliver our message; we [also] convinced [no fewer] than five countries to agree with our position," Aquino said on his arrival in Manila late Tuesday.

"Before, only two were talking about the importance of the (code of conduct). Now more are saying, 'It's about time formal talks on the code of conduct were started to avert tension in the future,"' he said.

The Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Vietnam are pushing for a code of conduct with China to minimise the risk of violent confrontations in the West Philippine Sea, home to major sea lanes vital to global trade and where islets, reefs and atolls are believed to be sitting on vast gas and oil deposits.

China said earlier that it was willing to work on a code of conduct with Asean countries at the proper time, although it doubted whether the regional bloc was the proper forum for discussions on such a code.

Cabinet Secretary Rene Almendras, who accompanied the President to the Asean summit, declined to identify the five countries, saying the discussions happened at the retreat sessions. He said the five were not necessarily members of Asean.

International law

The Philippines stands for the resolution of the maritime disputes with China according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (Unclos), which allows coastal states 370 kilometres (200 nautical miles) of exclusive economic zone.

Besides the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam and Taiwan also claim territory in the sea.

But China insists it has sovereignty over nearly the entire sea and refuses to discuss the overlapping claims with its rivals on any international forum. It insists on one-on-one discussions with the other claimants.

Almendras confirmed that Asean had failed to get any commitment from China on the code of conduct. But he said Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario would restart talks with his Southeast Asian counterparts soon.

Getting five countries to agree to the Philippine position was a "huge victory" given that it was facing Asia's economic and military superpower, the president said.

"It was like a David and Goliath fight, but we stood our ground. Otherwise, who else could we turn to? Now they know: the Filipino will not back down if he's in the right. The Filipino is good at associating with others, but we will not be oppressed," he said.

Almendras said the exclusion of Hun Sen's remarks from the postsummit joint communiqu? was a "success" on the part of the Philippines.

Trip's success

"I think, if you were to ask us what was the success of the Asean trip, it was precisely that-that in the final draft, at least the ones that was shown to us, and the ones that explained in the closing ceremony, that particular line that... there was an agreement that 'South China Sea issues will not be internationalised' was not included," Almendras said.

"It's not the end game. We know that it's still gonna be a long discussion, long struggle, but at the very least, the Philippine position was made very clear to everyone. And we were very, very happy at the turn out of the support for the Philippine position during the East Asia Summit retreat session," he said.

Almendras said that US President Barack Obama and other heads of state or government were "very attentive" when Aquino rose to ispute Hun Sen's remarks and declared that Asean was not the only route available for the Philippines.

DO THE SAME! New Philippine and Vietnamese passports should have them as well.

When Cambodia, this year's Asean chair, said at a meeting on Monday that the bloc had agreed not to "internationalise" the rifts, it was very rude of Philippine President Benigno Aquino III to interrupt and rebuke Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, alleging that no such consensus had been reached and he would continue to speak out on the global stage.

A ruder China just makes more conflicts. If the Chinese brand us like this, then we'll say to the world that at least, we are the rude people who stood up against the country that violated our sovereignty.

It is normal to hear this kind of story, considering the editorial came from CHINA ass!!!

I commend PNoy in doing such a thing to tell them how CHINA can manipulate ASEAN(particularly CAMBODIA) if nobody wants to contest their plan on the WPS. Good thing BRUNEI takes over the ASEAN chair, hopefully things will turn the other way around this time!

I'll go with the 4 nations meeting on the WPS topic!!!

KUDOS to PNOY!!! :armycheers: :patrioticpinoy: :armycheers:

Hence, countries like the Philippines need to realise which way the wind blows so as not to miscalculate the situation and make misjudgements. The wiser choice for these countries is to stick to the right track so that the conditions for relevant countries to sit down and discuss a code of conduct can ripen earlier.

A Big BULLY with a selfish outlook and corrupt mindsets!

On another note, am a bit curious as to what was the reaction of US Pres. Obama after the rebuking of the Cambodian scum leader by P.Noy and what will be the actions of the US after or now?

Let's say if we make a much bolder move like redeploying our PH ships (white or gray) back to Panatag Shoal on "stand ground" orders and filing diplomatic protest to UN, will the US interfere or take side with the Philippines??

After all,we are just trying to protect and defend our Country's rights and interests according to the UNCLOS, we are not the violators. :salute:
