Full report needed on China intrusion
POSTSCRIPT - Federico D. Pascual Jr. (The Philippine Star) - May 22, 2018 - 12:00am

It is high time President Rodrigo Duterte explained to the nation his reticence in confronting China on its military encroachment in the West Philippine Sea, instead of merely repeating his cop-out remark that he does not want to go to war over it.

It is also time the Senate spoke up on China’s setting up military outposts on artificial islands it has built up in the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone without benefit of a treaty on foreign bases concurred in by the Senate.

“Monitoring” intrusions and related activities in the WPS – meaning collecting second-hand reports – may not be safe and sufficient basis for crafting a pro-Filipino response to the continued Chinese militarization of Philippine waters.

Failure to protest China's bombers mean consent to militarization — Carpio
Patricia Lourdes Viray (philstar.com) - May 22, 2018 - 12:32pm

MANILA, Philippines — Urging the Philippine government to formally protest China's deployment of bomber aircraft in the South China Sea, acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio said that failure to do so means the country is consenting to the militarization in the region.

The People's Liberation Army Air Force recently landed a H-6K long range bomber, which can carry nuclear-armed cruise missiles, on Woody Island — China's largest outpost on the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea.

Carpio warned that Beijing's bomber could also land and take-off from any of its "big three" islands in the Spratly group — Mischief Reef, Subi Reef and Fiery Cross Reef, which are all within the Kalayaan Island Group.

Duterte spokesman on China bombers: ‘Bakit tayo lulusubin ng kaibigan?’

DZRH News

May 22, 2018

In an interview with dzRH on Tuesday, May 22, Duterte’s spokesperson Harry Roque said that while China’s show of aerial force was a cause for worry, it should not be regarded as a clear and present danger because the Asian giant is now a close friend of the Philippines. ...

“Siguro po ang takot ng Tsina, eh kung wala s’yang presente d’yan, eh baka mamya magkaro’n ng dominance ‘yong isang bansa…So ang tingin ko po ang ginagawa ng Tsina ay para magkaro’n ng balancing of forces at walang mag-angkin ng West Philippine Sea [Maybe China is afraid that if it has no presence there, another country would have dominance in the area…So in my view, China is doing it for balancing of forces and to prevent anyone from exclusively claiming the West Philippine Sea], ” he said.

"to prevent anyone from exclusively claiming the West Philippine Sea" PCOO (full transcript)

And China isn't doing exactly that thru their nine-dash line? Including our EEZ? Orwellian! :headbang:

Developments in Beijing's S. China Sea militarization ‘not new’ - Palace
Dharel Placido, ABS-CBN News

MANILA (UPDATED) - Recent developments in the South China Sea, including China’s deployment of bombers in the Paracel Islands, should not come as a surprise as Beijing has been aiming to boost its military presence in the disputed waters, Malacañang said Tuesday.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said this as he continued to defend the Philippines’ response to China’s deployment of bombers in the Paracels, which is also being claimed by Vietnam, as well as its installation of missiles in the Philippine-claimed Spratly Islands.

Duterte wants to assert PH rights over S. China Sea but warns of 'great loss'
Dharel Placido, ABS-CBN News

Posted at May 22 2018 07:36 PM

MANILA - In front of Philippine Navy officials and personnel, President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday said he wants to take on a stronger stance in the South China Sea dispute but said this would come at a great cost.

Duterte said he desires to “defend” the Philippines’ claims to the disputed sea, but that he also wants to avoid "any move that would be destructive to the nation.”

“I cannot afford at this time to go to war. I cannot go into a battle which I cannot win and would only result in destruction for our armed forces. I really want to do something to assert [our rights],” Duterte said in his speech during the 120th anniversary of the Philippine Navy at the Coconut Palace in Pasay City.

“In my own estimation, it would be [a] great loss to the nation and probably we will end up losing a war. All of these things, I want to be made known to you. Whether you accept it or not, that’s the reality on the ground,” Duterte said.

Japan defending intrusion of China in Japanese waters and island. Was it about war?
Viet defending intrusion of China in Viet Islands. Was it about going to war?
Indonesia stressing removal of militarization of China. Was it about going to war?
US preventing intrusion of Rus in Europe and Japan. Is it about going to war?
Filing protest and requiring a friend China to respect PH as a friend. Is it about war?

Only a brilliant, ineffective president thinks about war. PH is now a laughing stock of the international community, and a laughing stock of China. Defending China instead of defending Philippines. Treason. #DUTERTERESIGN

It is not about going to war. The funding for the infrastructure projects is still being processed. Once the funding is released then it would be safer to file a protest.

It’s clear to me now that SOB Duterte is a PRC stooge and a traitor to the Filipino people. He and his ilk (Cayetano, Roque, Pimentel III, Esperon, Bato, Go) will rue the day they turned against their country. Fifth columnists and traitors, ALL! I have no doubt these f—ckers have their hands dirty with Chinese payola. They enjoy killing Filipinos by the thousands but will not raise a finger against their Chinese masters. How much longer do we have to put up with this crap?

Does the Philippines have limited options on the South China Sea issue?
Patricia Lourdes Viray (philstar.com) - May 23, 2018 - 4:40pm

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte keeps on insisting that taking a stronger stance on against China's militarization in the South China Sea would mean going to war.

Justifying his administration's soft stance on the maritime dispute, Duterte said that he would have taken a stronger and more "violent" position on the matter but that would "probably be a great loss to the nation and probably end up losing a war."

As opposed to the president's pronouncements, the Philippines' options are not limited to waging a war to resolve the dispute.

Amid China's aggressive actions, De Lima calls on Duterte to convene security council

Audrey Morallo (philstar.com) - May 25, 2018 - 5:45pm

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte should immediately convene the National Security Council to help him identify the country’s right response to China’s increasingly aggressive military behavior in the South China Sea, according to opposition Sen. Leila de Lima (Liberal Party).

De Lima said that Duterte should be presented with all possible actions on China’s militarization of the dispute, which could range from forceful diplomacy, close collaboration with allies and neighboring countries and use of proper United Nations mechanisms.

The opposition lawmaker filed Senate Resolution 744 to urge the chief executive to immediately convene the NSC, the principal advisory body on the coordination and integration of plans and polices on national security.
