Will China follow SCS Code of Conduct?
ABS-CBN News

Posted at Apr 26 2017 03:02 AM

- Have they ever followed it?
- If they never did, then why start now?
- Besides they can stop for now, they've taken a huge chunk of it already.

China will NOT HONOR and OBEY the Code of Conduct, unless it will all be beneficial to them. They have already offered contracts to the areas they've invaded, while PH govt sits on a wait-and-see-and-give method.

Duterte says sea row a ‘non-issue’
Dharel Placido, ABS-CBN News

Posted at Apr 27 2017 05:06 PM

MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday called the South China Sea row between Manila and Beijing a "non-issue", as the Philippines hosts this week leaders from the region whose countries are also locked in a bitter maritime dispute with China.

Speaking to reporters, Duterte again stressed that now is not the right time to raise Manila’s arbitration victory against China, saying the ruling did not necessarily declare parts of the disputed sea as its territory but merely its entitlements.

PH plans to repair Pag-asa Island 'illegal', says Chinese envoy

"Well our official line is quite clear.
We view the occupation by the Filipino, Philippine side, of those islands [as] illegal.
And so the buildings on it are also illegal."

Duterte to China: It's PH duty to 'repair' Pag-asa Island facilities

Pia Ranada
May 01, 2017

DAVAO CITY, Philippines - President Rodrigo Duterte defended his plan to improve facilities in disputed Pag-asa Island amid China's declaration that such activities are "illegal."

"Yes of course, that's part of our duty as a nation. It's just repairs.
Well, they can always look away, look around. We have been there since 1974, by the way."

It remains to be seen if Duterte will cave in to pressure from China and stop these plans. He already took back a plan to himself fly to Pag-asa Island to raise the Philippine flag on Independence Day, after China asked him not to.

Philippines counters China, lays claim over Pag-asa
By Patricia Lourdes Viray
May 2, 2017

The Philippines stressed its claim over Pag-asa Island in response to the remarks of Chinese Ambassador Zhao Jianhua that occupation of the island was illegal.

"Pag-asa Island and the larger Kalayaan Island Group are a municipality of Palawan. Any visit or activity we undertake there are part and parcel of our Constitutional mandate to ensure the safety, well-being and livelihood of our citizens living in this municipality. Any visit or activity we undertake there are part and parcel of our Constitutional mandate to ensure the safety, well-being and livelihood of our citizens living in this municipality."
- Robespierre Bolivar, Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson -

The statement is the latest manifestation of the Duterte administration, whose dissonant pronouncements on the South China Sea swing from sympathy with China to outright rejection of its claims. Duterte himself insists on setting aside the Philippines' arbitral victory in its maritime claims in pursuing direct talks with Beijing.

Defense One

Excerpts from the D Brief:

"While we're on China, the Pentagon reportedly rejected three U.S. Navy requests to sail "within 12 nautical miles of Scarborough Shoal, a disputed reef in the South China Sea that is claimed by the Philippines and China," The New York Times reports in a broader look at how the Trump White House has navigated the thorny issue of freedom of navigation in the South China Sea. Instead of approving the move, which would have fallen in line with President Trump and his State Secretary's tough talk on the South China Sea, "the Pacific Command request - and two others by the Navy in February - was turned down by top Pentagon officials before it even made it to President Trump's desk," the Times reports. Exactly who turned down the requests is unclear, but it wasn't the White House, defense officials told the Times."

"The takeaway: "The decision not to challenge China's territorial claims represents a remarkable deference toward Beijing from an administration that is increasingly turning toward President Xi Jinping for help amid the escalating crisis in the Korean Peninsula."
Where we started, very few believed that Singapore could defend itself. Today, very few doubt that the SAF can protect Singaporeans and defend our nation.

-Dr. Ng Eng Hen
Singapore Minister for Defense

What's this, Duterte suddenly changing his tone toward China? Unless Ambassador Sta. Romana might be talking about matters above his paygrade and putting words into the president's mouth:

Duterte won't compromise PH sea claims in China's Belt and Road forum - envoy
ABS-CBN News

Posted at May 13 2017 11:04 AM

President Rodrigo Duterte's attendance in the Belt and Road Initiative in Beijing will not compromise the Philippines' claims in the South China Sea, Philippine Ambassador to China Chito Sta. Romana said Saturday.

"We are not signing an alliance or treaty here. We are participating in a forum," Sta. Romana said in a press conference in Beijing.

Duterte and his team of economic managers will "proceed from our own national interest under the banner of an independent foreign policy" when crafting deals with their counterparts in China's capital, Sta. Romana said.

"Where there are areas of convergence, we will proceed," he said.

Sorry ha, pero nakikita ko dito is style of "paasa", a double-talk. Baka yan ang pinapasabi ni Du30. Pero after a while sasabihin nya na "we are giving China all the permission to use WPS"; an act of Treason. Maraming beses na tayo pinaasa ni Du30 about the WPS. Nagyabang pa sya na pupunta sya ng solo. It is not na hindi nya kaya.... It is more of "Ayaw niya dahil duwag sya kay China"
