Du30 to AFP: Occupy all West PH Sea territories, I will raise the flag in Pag-asa

(UPDATE 4 - 10:30 p.m.) MANILA, Philippines - In what could be his boldest statement yet about the West Philippine Sea since he won the polls, President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday ordered the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to occupy all territories within the maritime area where the country has exclusive sovereign rights but are still being claimed by China.

The chief executive gave his orders during a briefing with military officers of the AFP Western Command at Camp Artemio Ricarte in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan where Duterte also held a press conference.

"We tried to be friends with everybody but we have to maintain our jurisdiction now at least (in the) areas...under control and I have ordered the Armed Forces to occupy all," the President said.

Duterte told journalists that there were about nine to 10 islands in the West Philippine Sea "where I must build bunkers or houses and make provisions for habitation."

Saner voices left to clean up the damage as usual:

Philippines to upgrade facilities, not occupy new areas in disputed sea: military

The Philippines will upgrade existing facilities on its inhabited islands and reefs in the South China Sea and not occupy new territories, adhering to a 2002 informal code in the disputed waters, defense and military officials said on Friday.

A statement from Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's office on Thursday said he had ordered troops to occupy uninhabited islands and shoals that the Philippines claims in the disputed waterway, asserting Philippine sovereignty in an apparent change of tack likely to anger China. ...

But defense and military officials have subsequently clarified the president's comments. ...

China's Foreign Ministry on Friday expressed concern at Duterte's reported remarks and said it hoped the Philippines could continue to properly manage maritime disputes with China.

When the Bigmouth opens his pie hole without using that little pea-brain he has on that nose with a face:

- Flags have been raised already.
- There are shelters and habitation for soldiers.
- Which island will he occupy? All are occupied.
- Does he want to start occupying reefs as what China does despite the DOC?

Two simple words would have done it: UPGRADE and REPAIR.

By trying to impress upon his rabid followers that he has "balls". He is just sending confusing signals to the outside world and leave the damage control to his cabinet.

In the eyes of China's foreign ministry, "handling properly" for another nation means appeasement.

BEIJING, Philippines -- China asked the Philippines on Friday to continue to properly handle the South China Sea dispute.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying issued the call at a press briefing when asked to comment on reports President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered troops to deploy to unoccupied South China Sea islands.

”We expressed concern over it and we hope the Philippines side can continue to properly (handle) the maritime dispute with China and to maintain this stable growth in China-Philippines relations,” Hua s

Looks like someone has thrown a "wicked curve-ball". What will China say and do? Certainly be worth watching.

PH military mulls occupying submerged rocks inside EEZ
'That's an order from the President and I intend to carry that out,' says General Eduardo Año on Friday, April 7

Rappler
April 07, 2017

MANILA, Philippines – Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief General Eduardo Año said he will reinforce troops guarding the country's maritime claims in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) to implement the latest orders of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Año said they are also mulling the occupation of submerged rocks inside the country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ). He did not provide details.

Duterte's latest order is a departure from his passive approach to the maritime dispute upon assuming the presidency. It comes amid his bid to strike warmer ties with China which is claiming virtually the entire sea.

From The Japan News - with a slightly different take on the issue.

Duterte to deploy troops to islands in South China Sea
9:05 pm, April 07, 2017
The Associated Press

MANILA (AP) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said Thursday he has ordered the military to occupy and fortify all Philippine-held islands in the disputed South China Sea to assert the country’s claims amid what he says is a race to control territory in the area.

Duterte said he has ordered the armed forces to occupy and place Philippine flags on all islands, reefs and shoals controlled by the Philippines.

"The president wants facilities built such as barracks for the men, water [desalination] and sewage disposal systems,
power generators [conventional and renewable], lighthouses, and shelters for fishermen."

- Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana -

It was unclear how Duterte’s order can be executed. Some of the tiny reefs and outcrops would need expensive and logistically difficult reclamation work before structures could be built on them.

Seems like just a matter of posturing mode..

Maybe an arranged "Publicity stunt" w/ Beijing? :dunno:

Either way it's bullocks! Like Dangling a Carrot w/o a stick..

If these new acts are really meant to be through, what if Beijing calls PDu30's bluff and sends a few of their PLAN Destroyer escorted w/ Corvettes n White ships to block the PNavy's plans...? :dunno:

Does he have something or anything to back up his words..?

For starters;

The least easiest and quickest acquisitions the Duterte Govt. should do are;

-To acquire a few of Anti ship Missiles or any of the same type, like (12) Land Based Mobile Brahmos launch Systems w/ undetermined no. of missiles.

-To acquire atleast (50) Combined SPIKE ER/NLOS launchers with atleast (500) ER/ NLOS Missiles that can be deployed or easily equipped for PN, PAF and PM assets, Sensitive Strategic Philippine Areas, KIG Controlled areas etc.

- (60) Chiron (Missile) from South Korea MANPAD to be deployed for PN Ships, PM, KIG Controlled areas, Sensitive Strategic Areas etc.

Fast track the acquisition of FA-50 AIM 120s, AGM 65 Missiles and Ammunitions stock pile.

At the least eh dapat meron ng mga ito ang Pilipinas sa ngayon, hindi yung puro BOLA bibig lang..

The funny thing is that PH doesn't have anything to pull, to back up PDu30's new antics in the WPS. This is the truth, sad to say. :armyLol:

There was a time when I thought that Hugo Chavez of Venezuela was the only "boca grande" in the world.

Now Duterte has replaced him as "La Boca Grande" de Asia." Unfortunately King Juan Carlos of Spain isn't currently active to put Duterte in his place as he did with Chavez.
