BEIJING, Jan 26 — Three Chinese shipstoday patrolled the James Shoal, an area also claimed by Malaysia, and soldiers and officers on board swore to safeguard its sovereignty, in the latest sign of Beijing’s territorial assertiveness in the South China Sea.

The group was made up of an amphibious landing craft, the Changbaishan, and two destroyers, state news agency Xinhua said.

Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

Rather fitting quote for Malaysia right now.

But ...

Malaysian sources deny PLAN drills around James Shoal

Quote:

26 January 2014

Malaysian military sources have said there is no basis to Chinese media claims that a People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) task group conducted a patrol around the James Shoal region of Malaysia's Exclusive Economic Zone on 26 January.

The sources told IHS Jane's that Malaysian ships and aircraft operating in the area, which lies 50 n miles from the East Malaysian town of Bintulu, reported no sightings nor electronic surveillance returns of the three ships cited in the Chinese media reports: the Type 071 landing ship dock amphibious assault ship Changbaishan (989); Luyang I-class (Type 052B) destroyer Wuhan (169); and Luyang II-class (Type 052C) destroyer Haikou (171).

Chinese Navy Ships Patrol Zengmu Reef

Three Chinese ships named Changbaishan, Wuhan and Haikou patrolled the Zengmu Reef on 26 January, Xinhua reports.

The ships formed a triangle and the officers and men lined up and held a sovereignty oath-taking ceremony in the waters of the Zengmu Reef.

James Shoal, also known as the Zengmu Reef, is an area claimed by both Malaysia and Beijing.

Navy patrol South China Sea islands

By Zhao Lei (China Daily) 08:31, January 27, 2014

The navy has been patrolling the Xisha and Nansha islands in the South China Sea on an ongoing training mission over the last week.

Warships and helicopters of the People's Liberation Army navy patrolled reefs off the Nansha Islands, which are comprised of more than 500 islets, shoals and reefs, and surrounding waters, from Thursday to Saturday.

Battleships from the PLA navy's South Sea Fleet, including the amphibian landing craft Changbaishan and the missile destroyers Haikou and Wuhan, set sail from ports in Guangdong and Hainan provinces on Monday.

The group conducted patrols off the Xisha Islands, including Yongxing, Dongdao, Chenhang and Zhongjian, on Tuesday and Wednesday. Marines, backed up by helicopters, on board the Changbaishan conducted landing drills and counter-landing defense measures with garrisons stationed on the islands.

The missile destroyers Haikou and Wuhan also conducted anti-submarine operations.

The ships will continue to sail south and practice tactical maneuvers in the western Pacific and Indian Ocean.
