Good on him to make a stand against the PRC's unreasonable new fishing rules. I will keep this thread separate from other related threads for now. Defense News

very bold statement from our dnd chief..but how it can be done if we dont have enough navy assets to safeguard our fishermen? what our navy will do if they encounter the opposing navies in the high seas or within our own territory safeguarding also their own people.. |

China calls on Manila to meet it halfway on fishing rules Reuters - 3 hours ago BEIJING (Reuters) - China called on the Philippines on Friday to meet it halfway on new Chinese fishing rules in the disputed South China Sea, adding that Beijing was always willing to make efforts to resolve such issues via talks. The Philippines will defy the new Chinese rules and the navy will escort fishing boats to protect them if necessary, the country's defence secretary said on Thursday. But Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei (not in any way related to me) struck a conciliatory line when asked about the comments at a news briefing, though he underscored China's resolve to defend its sovereignty. "China's will to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and integrity is unwavering. At the same time, we always put forth efforts to resolve the relevant issue through dialogue and consultations. We hope the relevant country can adopt an objective stance, meet China halfway on the relevant issue, and put forth concrete efforts to safeguard regional peace and stability." - Hong Lei Yahoo/Reuters |

^ No way. Meeting half-way is only for people who honors their word. The non-compliance on the verbal agreement on leaving Scarborough shoal at the same time is proof not to trust China's word. I hope they don't fall on this trap again. |

China is now trying to entice the Philippines into a bilateral talk, which is what they want in the 1st place, so they can impose their fishing rules on us. I hope that the President will stand firm that we will not recognize China's Fishing Rules. If a dialogue do materialize then its not to meet half-way but to impose our sovereignty. Meeting half-way is like saying that we do recognize China's claim all over the whole Western Philippine Sea. I second the motion with Sir Icefrog that we should not be duped again by China into entering an agreement with people who does not fulfill their end of the bargain |

PHL rejects China's call to meet halfway on Beijing’s fisheries law The Philippines has rejected China’s call on Manila to "meet halfway" on the new Chinese law that bans the entry of foreign vessels in Beijing-claimed areas in the disputed South China Sea. Manila last week issued a public protest against the law as the areas it covered included Philippine-claimed territories off the resource-rich waters it calls West Philippine Sea. Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez, in a statement on Saturday, said the regulation is “only one of the unilateral measures by China to force a change in the regional status quo in order to advance its nine-dash line position of undisputed sovereignty over nearly the entire South China Sea.” more: http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/344430/news/nation/phl-rejects-china-s-call-to-meet-halfway-on-beijing-s-fisheries-law |
