Rescue of fishermen in Recto Bank hits snag ABS-CBNnews.com Posted at 12/08/2013 6:54 PM | Updated as of 12/08/2013 6:54 PM MANILA -- A Navy gunboat sent to rescue the 10 fishermen stranded at the Recto Bank in the Spratlys had to return to Palawan Sunday due to the turbulent seas. What the Armed Forces will do instead is to send a Navy patrol ship as soon as a “minor repair” on it is completed. “Initially, we have dispatched a ship but because of the sea condition, it couldn’t make it. So we are compelled to send a larger ship. The weather is fine but the sea condition is challenging,” said AFP Western Command spokeswoman Lt. Cheryl Tindog. The military received last Thursday from one “Rubin” that their boat named “3 Sisters” encountered engine trouble. The crew has 10 members. A Nomad plane found the boat anchored east of the Recto Bank. Tindog said the fishermen appeared to be doing well. “These are fishermen whose boat encountered engine trouble, drifted and subsequently anchored in the area,” she said. She could not yet fully describe the circumstances. “As of now, they are anchored (at the Recto Bank), awaiting for the arrival of our ship...We are assured that the supplies they need are augmented,” she said. The Nomad plane air-dropped supplies to the fishermen. It did not leave until the supplies were retrieved. -http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/12/08/13/rescue-fishermen-recto-bank-hits-snag Kudos to our AFP for their swift response! We really need more capable PAF assets, PN and PCG ships to handle any kind of situations.
