The PH gov't is selling PH to China. Why will the govt push the claim, the fact that he will sell PH to China? Therefore, they let China take whatever pleases them. Treason!

PH asserting rights under UNCLOS; no plan to set aside July 12 ruling on SCS - Yasay
By: InterAksyon.com
December 19, 2016 4:40 PM

MANILA — Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay issued Monday a statement clarifying media reports - based on President Duterte's remarks - that the Philippines might "set aside" or ignore that UN-backed tribunal's ruling in its favor against Beijing's nine-dash-line claims in the South China Sea.

The Philippines reiterates its "respect for and firm adherence to this milestone ruling," Yasay said in reference to the July 12, 2016 decision of the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague, "and will be guided by its parameters when tackling the issue of maritime claims in the South China Sea."

Yasay explained that contrary to impressions the government was setting aside the ruling, it is simply working hard on building confidence in its relations with China, in order to make bilateral discussions easier somewhere down the road where, in Manila's view, the PCA ruling would be a very helpful guide.

"I also wish to reiterate what the President has stated in the past that he will not deviate from the four corners of the ruling," Yasay stressed.

MANILA, Jan. 27 (PNA)

Based on the survey of 1,200 people, 84 perent of those asked agreed that the government should uphold its rights in the disputed region as stipulated in the July 2016 decision of the Permanent Court of Arbitration that ruled in favor of the Philippine claim. ...

The survey was conducted from December 6 to 11, 2016, two months after Duterte’s state visit to China.

The same survey found that 47 percent of Filipinos agree that the country’s security relations with the United States remain beneficial.

CA member 'very troubled' by Yasay statements on South China Sea row

Rappler

February 22, 2017

Responding to questions from CA members, Yasay reiterated the official stand of the Duterte government that the Philippines does not own the disputed area in the South China Sea, even after an arbitral tribunal ruled in the country's favor against China on the sea row.

“My position, which is the official position, is that the disputed part of South China Sea has never belonged to anyone,” Yasay said in response to questions of CA members on Wednesday.

Occidental Mindoro Representative Josephine Ramirez-Sato questioned Yasay about his earlier pronouncements on the arbitral tribunal’s ruling that favored the Philippines and declared China’s 9-dash-line as invalid. ...

Yasay clarified that the Philippines will continue to occupy areas that fall within its exclusive economic zone (EEZ), but that the issue of ownership shall be removed from official statements.

China's Foreign Ministry claims Yasay’s recent statement contradicts what Duterte and Xi agreed upon

Philippines News Agency

MANILA, Feb. 24 (PNA)

“As we have noted, Mr. Yasay’s recent remarks apparently deviate from the consensus of the two leaders, go against the current trend of the sound and rapid development of China-Philippine relations, disagree with the overall stable situation of the South China Sea, and run counter to the shared desire of regional countries to maintain peace and stability of the South China Sea and promote regional cooperation,” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang said.

“China finds them baffling and regrettable. We hope that Mr. Yasay can follow the consensus reached by the two leaders and the shared desire of regional countries, exercise prudence, and make concrete efforts to uphold China-Philippines relations and regional peace and stability,” he added.

Geng was responding to a question if it was true that China promised Duterte that they would not build structures on Scarborough Shoal as Yasay claimed.

“On the South China Sea issue, including on building structures on Huangyan Dao, China's position is consistent and clear and is subject to no change,” he said.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang's Regular Press Conference on February 23, 2017

Q: First, the Chinese Commerce Minister appears to have cancelled his visit to the Philippines to sign a number of business deals agreed to during President Duterte's visit to China last year. Can you confirm whether his visit has been cancelled? If so, give us a reason. Second, the Philippine Foreign Minister today said that China had promised President Duterte that it would not build structures on Huangyan Dao. Can you confirm whether China has made that promise?

A: On your first question, due to scheduling reasons, the China-Philippines Joint Commission on Economic and Trade Cooperation has decided to postpone its meeting for several days. The two sides are still working on relevant preparations.

I want to point out that the successful visit to China by President Duterte last year brought about a turnaround in China-Philippines relations. The two sides are now making joint efforts to orderly implement various cooperation agreements signed during President Duterte's visit. The delay in holding the meeting is because of scheduling. Preparations are still ongoing.

On your second question, with regard to Foreign Secretary Yasay's remarks, I have already made clear China's position at yesterday's press conference.

On the South China Sea issue, including on building structures on Huangyan Dao, China's position is consistent and clear and is subject to no change.

I would like to add a few words here. President Duterte's visit to China last year resulted in the two leaders agreeing to adhere to good-neighborliness and friendship, properly handling differences and pursuing common development. The two sides have returned to the right track of properly dealing with the South China Sea issue through bilateral friendly consultations and have seen booming cooperation in various sectors. As we have noted, Mr. Yasay's recent remarks apparently deviate from the consensus of the two leaders, go against the current trend of the sound and rapid development of China-Philippine relations, disagree with the overall stable situation of the South China Sea, and run counter to the shared desire of regional countries to maintain peace and stability of the South China Sea and promote regional cooperation. China finds them baffling and regrettable. We hope that Mr. Yasay can follow the consensus reached by the two leaders and the shared desire of regional countries, exercise prudence, and make concrete efforts to uphold China-Philippines relations and regional peace and stability.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang's Regular Press Conference on February 22, 2017

Q: The ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat issued a press release yesterday in the Philippines, in which all ASEAN foreign ministers underscore the importance of the full and effective implementation of the DOC in its entirety and the early adoption of the COC. Also there are reports saying that Philippine Foreign Secretary Yasay told the press after the meeting that all ASEAN countries were unanimous in concern over China's deployment of weapons on the artificial islands and militarization in the South China Sea, urging relevant parties to prevent escalation through dialogue. What is your comment?

A: We have noted these reports. The ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat held yesterday in the Philippines mainly discussed the ASEAN community building and the celebration of ASEAN's 50th anniversary. Thanks to the concerted efforts of China and ASEAN countries, the situation in the South China Sea is becoming more stable. On the basis of fully and effectively implementing the DOC, China would like to work with ASEAN countries to actively move forward the COC consultations, complete a draft framework of the COC by the mid of this year, and strive to conclude the COC based on consensus building at an early date.

On February 27, which is next Monday, the 19th working group meeting on the DOC implementation participated by China and ten ASEAN countries will be held in Bali, Indonesia. All parties are expected to exchange views on implementing the DOC and promoting maritime practical cooperation and the COC consultations. China will work in confidence with relevant countries to advance the COC talks and to collectively safeguard peace and stability of the South China Sea by properly handling differences, managing disputes and removing disturbances through regional institutional arrangements.

You mentioned something reportedly said by Philippine Foreign Secretary Yasay. I believe that they are opinions of his own, not of the whole ASEAN group. I need to point out that since taking office last July, President Duterte has been making positive efforts to improve China-Philippine relations, properly handle the South China Sea issue, and work with China to place the issue back to the right track of bilateral friendly consultation. Since the successful state visit to China by President Duterte last October, the all-round improvement of the bilateral relationship has led to thriving cooperation in various fields which has delivered benefits to the two peoples. This has been widely endorsed and well-received. This fully proves that relevant policies by President Duterte meet the fundamental interests of the two countries and peoples and contribute to regional peace and stability. We hope that Foreign Secretary Yasay follows the same line.

Commentary: The Philippines did not provoke China through arbitration

Philippine Star

Quote:

May 5, 2017

Speaking during the launching of a book written by former Justice Secretary and Solicitor General Estelito Mendoza, then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo accused the Aquino government of provoking China into building and fortifying the land features it occupied in the South China Sea. According to her, China stated that the Philippines filing a case in the United Nations Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague provoked it into transforming those rocks and islets into artificial islands with military facilities. She also argued that “In effect, we were fighting in The Hague. Maybe we are winning in The Hague. But China made it a point that they were winning in the waters of the South China Sea.”

Former President Arroyo is repeating the Chinese line that her successor provoked China into building these artificial fortified islands that have effectively militarized the South China Sea. This claim, however, ignores the facts that the building of these fortified islands is a component of China’s strategy of maritime expansion into the South China. It is also oblivious to the circumstance that former President Benigno Aquino III was simply reacting to China’s bullying of the Philippines during the 2011 Reed Bank Incident and the 2012 Scarborough Shoal stand-off.
