Maybe they'll touch down in the Sea of Tranquility to see whether the Apollo 11 mission really did land there...or recorded their mission in a studio as some conspiracy theorists believe.

Note: To the other mods, please keep this thread here in this section. Any updates on the civilian portion of China's space program should probably be posted here.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China will land its first probe on the moon in early December which will deploy a buggy to explore its surface, an official said on Tuesday, marking a major milestone in the country's space ambitions.

China has already photographed the surface of the moon to prepare for the landing, said a spokesman for the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense.

In 2007, China launched its first moon orbiter, the Chang'e One orbiter, named after a lunar goddess, which took images of the surface and analyzed the distribution of elements.

The lunar explorer buggy was named "Yutu" in a public vote. "Yutu" means jade rabbit, a reference to Chang'e pet rabbit in folklore.

"Chang'e Three's mission requires mastering many key technologies. The technical difficulties and the risks involved in carrying out the mission will be high," spokesman Wu Zhijian told a news conference, carried live on state television.

"In taking on the mission to land on the moon, Chang'e Three will help China fulfill it's lunar exploration dream, it's space dream and the Chinese dream," said Wu.

Scientists will aim to carry out a soft landing and the buggy will rove around on the moon's surface. Scientists will also and test deep space communication technologies, Wu added.

The world should be worried. Once that Chinese buggy lands on the moon every terrain it touches would be claimed as Chinese territory. Before we know it they will impose an ADIZ on the moon and other nations wanting to go to the moon will have to get permission first to the Chinese. Chinese books regarding Chinese history would now have new entries regarding the moon as being inherently or historically theirs. I'm not kidding.

And you would even have to ask permission from them before you can look a the moon. :lollol:

Would space faring nations have to submit and file a flight plan to them whenever they send probes or send astronauts to Mars or any of the outer planets?

China launches 'Jade Rabbit' rover on its first moon-landing mission

A Long March 3B rocket rises early Monday Beijing time from China's Xijuan Satellite Launch Center, sending the Chang'e 3 spacecraft on its first step toward the moon.

China launched a powerful rocket on Sunday to send the country's first lunar lander and rover to Earth's nearest neighbor.

China's first moon rover is called Yutu, which means "Jade Rabbit" in Chinese, according to state media reports. It went into space with the Chang'e 3 moon lander atop a Long March 3B rocket from China's Xichang Satellite Launch Center at 12:30 p.m. ET Sunday (1:30 a.m. Monday local time).

If all goes well, the Chang'e 3 mission will land on the moon on Dec. 14, according the European Space Agency, which is providing mission tracking of the lander and rover for China's space agency. [See Photos of China's Yutu Moon Rover and Chang'e 3 Lander]

China successfully soft-lands probe on the moon
Dec 14, 10:08 AM EST

BEIJING (AP) -- China on Saturday successfully carried out the world's first soft landing of a space probe on the moon in nearly four decades, state media said, the next stage in an ambitious space program that aims to eventually put a Chinese astronaut on the moon.

The unmanned Chang'e 3 lander, named after a mythical Chinese goddess of the moon, touched down on Earth's nearest neighbor following a 12-minute landing process.

The probe carried a six-wheeled moon rover called "Yutu," or "Jade Rabbit," the goddess' pet. After landing Saturday evening on a fairly flat, Earth-facing part of the moon, the rover was slated to separate from the Chang'e eight hours later and embark on a three-month scientific exploration.

This is actually a major achievement as China is only the third country after the US and USSR who have done this and the first Asian country to do so. Anyone notice that no one (perhaps a few comments on MSM articles) is actually congratulating them for attaining such a major achievement even among fellow Asian countries.

They plan to make a space station on the moon by 2020. I think people are more worried rather than ecstatic and happy for their achievements.

I guess China really wants to turn the moon into The Death Star, they're gonna need more power because a real Death Star can obliterate an entire planet. :lollol:

China has made a major diplomatic faux pas by illustrating its Moon Rover exhibit with a stock image of a nuclear mushroom cloud over Europe.

While it's probably just an embarrassing error, it's still an unsettling image given the Chinese government's recent statements concerning plans to build a missile base on the Moon.

On December 3, The Beijing Times reported that Chinese experts are discussing whether the People’s Liberation Army could establish a missile base on the Moon. Per the Taiwan-based, English-language site Want China Times:

An expert from the China National Space Administration's Lunar Exploration Programme Center told the [Beijing Times]that China plans to send its first astronaut to the moon by 2030. By 2050, the moon could become a base from which to send the country's manned spacecraft to explore deep space, the source said.
