Piling Sand in a Disputed Sea, China Literally Gains Ground By DAVID E. SANGER and RICK GLADSTONE APRIL 8, 2015 New York Times ![]() A satellite image from March 16 shows work on an emerging artificial island at Mischief Reef in the South China Sea. Credit Center for Strategic and International Studies, via Digital Globe WASHINGTON - The clusters of Chinese vessels busily dredge white sand and pump it onto partly submerged coral, aptly named Mischief Reef, transforming it into an island. Over a matter of weeks, satellite photographs show the island growing bigger, its few shacks on stilts replaced by buildings. What appears to be an amphibious warship, capable of holding 500 to 800 troops, patrols the reef's southern opening. ![]() Photos taken on January 24, 2012 (left photo) and March 16, 2015 (right photo). Center for Strategic and International Studies via Digital Globe Building Islands on Mischief Reef These satellite images show Mischief Reef, part of the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. In the March 16 image there are several dredgers visible at the northern and western edges of the reef, and to the south, where the entrance to the reef has been widened to about 275 meters. The issue poses a problem for the Obama administration, not simply because the Philippines is a treaty ally. China is working so quickly that its assertion of sovereignty could become a fait accompli before anything can be done to stop it. |

I agree with you truegrit! PAF/PN and the Ramos Govt. made a big mistake not bombing those structures back then, when they were first occupied.. ^This is a very good idea, a reasonable THREAT, for them not to reconsider, because this area is definitely inside our mainland EEZ, that's if the US agrees with us. "tingnan ko lang kung hindi sumakit ang ulo nila (China) kapag may US presence within KIG. That's if they don't stop what they are doing and leave Mischief Reef area alone... Kasabay nito, eh bawiin na natin yun Scarborough shoal katulong ang USN. Edited by Andres Boning, Apr 11 2015, 12:49 AM.

I'll withold criticism on our govt not moving against the bully structures since even though UNCLOS seems to favor us with the 200 mile law of the sea, this is really 'disputed areas' in the eyes of the bully . But once the UNCLOS/ITLOS issues a ruling that clearly shows the maritime lines and which areas belong to which country, they cannot be called disputed areas anymore in the eyes of international law and the united nations. It will very, very difficult for our govt not to physically enforce or not do anything physically against bully structures within areas assigned to us by UNCLOS/ITLOS. Not doing anything in areas that is ours legally speaking will violate our constitution and not enforce what international law awarded us. Therefore, since the ITLOS ruling will be next year, I expect that there will be dangerous levels of unavoidable physical actions next year unless our govt continues the same inaction in past years in which case, we can start throwing rocks at the congress and malacanang. REMEMBER, next year is the start of action. ...It does not matter if we are much weaker, it will be much easier for our allies and the united nations to come to our aid due to the ITLOS/UNCLOS specific ruling for the west philippine sea.
