A Nation Threatened
by Jun Abad
Posted at 06/26/2013

We are a nation threatened and that’s probably good for us.

Psychologists say that when someone is threatened, such as someone’s freedom of action might be denied or reduced, psychological reactance is generated. In other words, a nation threatened would be motivated to mobilize a counterforce. . . .

Politics of the mind

It is said that people are much more motivated by the idea of losing something than by the idea of gaining something of equal value.

Without saying that they have the same value, this is probably the reason why the possible denial of access to the West Philippine Sea has more emotional impact than the decision of United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf to award to the Philippines Benham Rise, a 13-million-hectare undersea landmass off the coast of Aurora province that, according to DENR, is potentially rich in mineral and natural gas deposits.

That is why it is probably useful to make us continuously feel threatened if only to make us more competitive, collectively motivated to help ourselves, and make our leaders demonstrate more political will. Having said that, we should guard against sliding into having bunker mentality or being excessively defensive or hostile.

We need to secure our future for our children and future generations and we could only accomplish it if we could maintain or restore our sense of confidence and faith in our capability to do it.

We are a nation threatened and we probably need more of it.

Group urges Pinoys to stand up to China 'bullying' in July 24 'global protest'
By: Pots de Leon, InterAksyon.com

Convenors of the West Philippine Sea Coalition, among them former Interior secretary Rafael
MANILA, Philippines -- A newly formed coalition urged Filipinos to stand up to what it called China's bullying in the West Philippine Sea in rallies to be staged around the world on July 24.

The West Philippine Sea Coalition, at a press conference held Wednesday to introduce itself, also urged the government to hasten the modernization of the Armed Forces to allow the military to credibly defend the country’s exclusive economic zone.

The group said rallies will be staged in front of Chinese embassies, consulates and government offices, the largest of which is expected to gather more than 5,000 protesters in front of the Chinese consulate in Makati City.

The Filipino-Chinese community is being urged should be one-with-us, in this fight. We may have Chinese blood, but we are still Filipinos by birth and by heart. We should stand against INVASION. We should stand against Chinese Territorial grabbing of PH areas. We should stand against the bullying of Chinese gov't. If they really want peace, they should "RESPECT" the Philippine Nation.

Let's see the Fil-Chi community if they really care. They don't realize that w/ the Chinese govt bullying us, it will even jeopardize more their businesses here.

WPSC’s lead convenor, former interior secretary Rafael Alunan III, said a huge anti-China rally will be held in front of the World Center housing the Chinese consular office along Buendia Avenue in Makati on July 24.

Former lawmaker Roilo Golez, representing his group Di Ka Pasisiil Movement, said: “We would like to ask everyone, the entire nation, to speak up with one voice in protest against China's bullying and its continued illegal occupation of the country’s maritime territory.”

The new group is also comprised of Akbayan, Rebolusyonaryong Alyansa Makabansa(RAM), US Pinoys For Good Governance, Civil Defense Action Group (CDAG), Sho Far Blowers, Student Alliance of the Philippines, Zonta-Manila, UP Pi Omicron Fraternity, UP Women Lawyers, Muslim Coalition, Guardians Stop Global Warning Foundation, Grain New Wine and Oil Ministries.

Artists Charice Pempengco, Billy Crawford, Anne Curtis, JR, Roxanne Barcelo, and QYork have all expressed their support for the anti-China rally in Makati.

Singer Leah Navarro will lead the singing of the Philippine national anthem during the rally.

I am disappointed as Bayad Muna, Grabe Na, and Anak Puwit are not attending.
