Taiwan wants fishing deal with Philippines By Camille Diola (philstar.com) | Updated June 7, 2013 - 9:23am Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou and Philippine President Benigno Aquino III. MANILA, Philippines - Taiwan is looking to arrange a fishing agreement with the Philippines as a way to restore peaceful relations between the two countries following the tension over the death of a Taiwanese fisherman. Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou said in a report late Thursday that a fisheries pact with the Philippines can be patterned after the Taiwan-Japan agreement. "The Republic of China government is peace-loving and dedicated to resolving the dispute peacefully ... The Taiwan-Japan fisheries agreement can serve as a fine example for reference," he told Tokyo-based Kyodo News. The report of the parallel probe of Philippine and Taiwanese investigators on the May 9 fatal shooting of a Taiwanese fisherman in Balintang Channel off Batanes, meanwhile, is still being prepared for public release this week. http://www.philstar.com/headlines/2013/06/07/951237/taiwan-wants-fishing-deal-philippines |

This is the reason behind why they are so angry about the PCG shooting their fisherman's boat last month...so they can justify their intentions of allowing them to fish in our waters....tsk tsk tsk! |

IMO their allowed on designated areas and are restricted on what to catch, they should also notify us whenever their sending ships for fishing to prevent this accident from ever occurring. |

According to a group called PAMALAKAYA (not sure if it sounds like an obscene word in Cebuano) they do. "France recalled that last year, his group pressed President Aquino to investigate the proliferation of foreign poachers in BenHam Rise." "Pamalakaya issued a public appeal last year urging the Aquino administration and local fishery officials regarding the invasion of large-scale industrial fleets from Japan, Taiwan and South Korea which are catching first-class tuna in Casiguran Bay in Aurora province which is near the BenHam Rise." "Pamalakaya members from Aurora reported that foreign factory ships from Japan, South Korea and Taiwan are often seen in the waters off the province. France argued that Japanese, Taiwanese and South Korean industrial fleets are seen catching first rate tuna off the waters of Aurora, which is part of Asia Pacific Ocean." "The same foreign fishing vessels have even entered the municipal fishing grounds and the Philippine Coast Guard is not doing anything to stop these foreign ocean grabbers exploring the fishery resources of BenHam Rise." "The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) announced yesterday that more than 60 fish-aggregating devices will be installed at Benham Rise starting May 30. " http://www.sunstar.com.ph/pampanga/local-news/2013/06/02/group-pnoy-know-history-benham-rise-285493 ** Now if these reports are true, then it is high time they start comprehensively monitoring this area since it now belongs to you. Not only does this mean that the BFAR/PCG need more ships. This also highlights the need for long range MPA's. Edited by Hong Nam, Jun 8 2013, 10:58 PM.
