General Luo Yuan, known as one of the most outspoken senior officers in China's People's Liberation Army, has said that the killing of Taiwanese fisherman Hung Shih-cheng by the Philippine coast guard has given China an opportunity to seize the eight islands currently held by Manila in the South China Sea, according to the Hong Kong newspaper Wen Wei Po.

"Opening fire on a Taiwanese fishing boat is not only a provocation to Taiwan, but to the entire Chinese family," said Luo. "I don't know what law the Taiwanese fishing boat violated for fishing in the overlapping exclusive economic zones instead of the Philippines' territorial waters."

If the Philippines continues to harass Taiwanese fishing vessels, Luo said the PLA will launch an attack to recover an island in the Spratlys held by the Philippines. The general China gained experience in dealing with the Philippines in the standoff over Scarborough Shoal last year.

Chinese general derided on web after taking up Weibo
If your enemy has conquered the commanding heights, do not follow him but retreat, said Sun Tzu in the Art of War.

It would have been good advice for Major General Luo Yuan, one of the most outspoken senior officers of the People's Liberation Army, as he stepped onto the "battleground" of the Chinese internet.

But he soon found that, unlike on television, his online audience could answer back. Tens of thousands of people started commenting on his tweets, and he quickly came under a barrage of abuse.

General Luo was licking his wounds. "I don't want to talk about it," he told Fairfax Media. "I haven't got anything more to say about public opinion."

Chinese General’s Angry Online Rant Has Japanese Laughing, And Many Chinese Cheering

At home in China, many Web users showered stinging personal attacks on Luo Yuan as well. When he tweeted a paean to himself—“General Luo Yuan is a soldier as well as a scholar…His suggestions are extremely reasonable and brilliant. The military analysis he gives is the most popular on TV”netizens exploded with laughing smiley faces.

Sina Military, a seemingly government-backed Weibo account that transmits military-related news, swiftly posted a comment stating that Luo’s account had been hacked. Unfortunately for Luo, this only prompted more jibes: “A country’s security specialist—yet it seems he doesn’t even know how to change his password,” wrote @我爱燕莎.

A SOLDIER AND A SCHOLAR
How not to run a Chinese military affairs account on Sina Weibo

After firing up his first Weibo post (link in Chinese) last Friday, China’s General Luo Yuan is discovering the unsettling chaos of free expression—particularly that found online.

Fortunately for the beleaguered Luo, the fleet-fingered Sina Military Weibo channel blogger quickly swooped in with an explanation. The general’s account had been hacked, said the post (link in Chinese), and the hacker had written the glowing posts. (Typical hacker behavior, that.)

But this, too, may have backfired. First of all, a meme have have been born: Weibo users have already grabbed on to the “Luo Yuan is a soldier and a scholar” quote such that many are typing it into the comments sections of Luo’s new posts.

Then there’s the larger problem with the hacking defense. As the Sydney Morning Herald pointed out, Kai-fu Lee—former head of Google China and major Weibo personality—summed it up this way: “If the national security professional can’t even change his password then the people really should be worried.”

Would you take this guy seriously? I don't. Just another egotistical, narcissistic, individual with delusions of grandeur, "has been" who is desperately trying to seek attention.

more intimidation. they are trying to paralyze the dept of foreign affairs and civilian officials .

It works for them. The Phil. officials shiver at the voice of these Chinks. In fact, the Taiwanese and Chinese are having fun.

The Filipinos all over the world are humiliated and there is no let down of this humiliation based on how its govt. handled this situation.

This incident would have made the Filipinos proud but, the mishandling by the govt. had turned it into another humbling experience.

Wily pest,

No racist comments towards ANY nationality will be tolerated on this forum. That was a warning.

Please direct your negative comments against the Chinese and Taiwanese governments who are behind this current scrape, not the Chinese people.

There are also Chinoys on this forum who would take the Philippine side of this dispute and who might take offense at your generalized racial slur.

Chinese and Taiwanese I refer to are the govt. I thought that was pretty obvious because that is the subject of conversation.

you should ask for clarification 1st rather than make assumptions.

I think MSantor is referring to your use of the word "chink" matey and not about their governments. I think I am guilty of this also as I recall I may have used it in the past.

Is that it? I've used it a hundred times and so have others. Why direct the complain at one person instead of making an announcement??

Besides the news and commentaries have called the Filipinos all kinds of names too........including the term "savages." Chink is a pretty light term when u consider what they have called us.
