As it pursues its territorial ambitions, China is following an increasingly belligerent course that could easily tip into war with its neighbours. In the last few days, elements of the People's Liberation Army have aggressively intruded into the territory of both Japan and India. At the same time, China has ratcheted up its rhetoric with Vietnam and the Philippines as those countries attempt to assert their sovereignty over disputed islands in the South China Sea. Of the three flashpoints, by far the most threatening is the increasingly aggressive games of chicken Beijing's military forces are playing over and around Japan's Senkaku Islands, known in Chinese as the Diaoyutai, in the East China Sea. Last Tuesday, 40 Chinese military planes, mostly jet fighters, flew close to the cluster of five uninhabited islands, prompting Japan to scramble F-15 fighter planes from an airbase on the Japanese island of Okinawa. At the same time, eight Chinese maritime surveillance ships entered the 12-nautical-mile zone around the islands marking Japan's territorial waters. Japanese newspapers quoted a Tokyo government official as describing last week's actions by the Chinese forces as "an unprecedented threat. If such a show of force continues, it is feared it could lead to a situation where the Japanese air defence force may not be able to cope." The incursions are the biggest since China started this campaign of elbowing the Japanese defence forces on Dec. 13 last year. yes, they are very determined.. that's the main reason why they are spending hundreds of billions of dollars in the PLA.. access denial - this means denying access to the US Navy, they have developed carrier-killing ballistic missiles. once they have done that, they will re-claim Taiwan, claim the East Sea and the whole South China Sea.. but they will not be able to do that, the US are now developing their antidote to this missiles, and I don't think China will have an answer to US ballistic missile submarines. Japan will be ready against China, I don't think they will just lie down and be run over. Taiwan will be defended by America. The Philippines, I don't know! |

I'm guessing your talking about their laser weapons. Hopefully they can also deploy one in phils if you temporarily basing your troops here along with the x band radar to protect the weakest part of their shield. As for Japan, I have a deep respect in their military despite they lost wwII. As they are very disciplined in combat. the Americans learnt this the hard way then faced them in combat. I think that antiballistic missiles are the answer to antiship ballistic missiles. laser weapons are not that developed yet. We need to put to good use to what we already have. |

The chinese may have developed an anti-carrier missile. But how effective it is on a moving target still remains to be seen, much more on a target with layered active and passive missiles and electronic defense systems. |

Let's see... 1) CCTV - broadcast journalism at its crappiest. 2) China's State Oceanic Administration - liars and sensationalist idiots. 3) PLA Colonel Yue Gang - useless plutocrat bypassed and retired failing to get his star. Saying: "The joint military drill also meant to tell the Philippines that Beijing's tough stance towards them will continue." Yeah! This article reeks of propaganda. China's Collision Course with Itself 9 July 2014 Gordon G. Chang Shi Yinhong, an international relations professor at Beijing's Renmin University, has just issued a warning that Chinese leaders will not be deterred from engaging in increasingly provocative conduct. "There could be some tactical change in the direction of moderation but I cannot see any fundamental change in strategic orientation." Shi, however, has been saying that what the Chinese really mean is that "we will keep going even though we cannot succeed." Chinese policymakers work under a political system that now does not permit them to act pragmatically, cooperatively, or sensibly. Three reasons for the inability of Beijing to change course: (1) The nationalism promoted by the Communist Party. (2) The beliefs of senior leaders. (3) The dynamics inside the People's Liberation Army. China, in short, is trapped in dangerous currents, almost all of them attributable to the flaws inherent in its particular brand of authoritarianism. We often forget that the form of a country's government matters. There is an almost unshakeable belief in America that China, under Communist Party rule, can be talked into becoming a responsible member of the international community. We talk to Chinese officials in every conceivable format. Some analysts blamed the US for a deterioration of the relationship by not paying enough attention to China. That's a misdiagnosis. China's relations with many states, especially those to its south and to its east, have spiraled downward in recent years. By now we should realize that Beijing's troubles with the international community have little or nothing to do with others. In any event, Shi does not see much hope that ties will get better. "This kind of tension between China and the US and US allies will deteriorate rather than improve," he notes. China, unfortunately, is on a collision course with the world. World Affairs Journal |
