MANILA, Philippines - The military has yet to verify the identity of two aircraft that intruded into Philippine territory at the West Philippine Sea last week, and said it was not letting down its guard, expecting further incursions.

Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said this was not the first time that foreign aircraft flew over Philippine territory in the disputed Spratly islands. He admitted authorities were having some difficulty verifying the identity of the aircraft, presumably fighter jets, as these flew at high speed and at high altitude.

Major General Rustico Guerrero, commander of the Armed Forces’ Western Command, said they would not speculate as to where the two aircraft came from, but said this incident only showed the immediate need to upgrade the military's capability in external defense.

"It's still for verification [because they were flying at very high altitude, so it was hard for our units to verify]," Guerrero told reporters.

The Philippine Navy reported sightings of two unidentified aircraft passing at high speed and high altitude over the vicinity of Pag-asa Islands on the morning of April 4. The two aircraft were headed north coming from the southwest.

AFP: pressing need to upgrade capabilities in wake of airspace intrusion

Quote:

The reported sightings of two unidentified aircraft over the Pag-Asa islands Thursday last week highlights the pressing need for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to upgrade its capabilities, especially in monitoring and defending the country's airspace.

This, as the military admitted they have yet identify the two aircraft that were spotted making an overflight in the vicinity of Pag-Asa islands.

"(The overflights of two unidentified aircraft) highlights the need of the AFP to upgrade itself so that it can at least have a minimum credible deterrent," said AFP Western Command chief, Maj. Gen. Rustico Guerrero.

The Wescom commander said the two unidentified aircraft may have just been passing through the our airspace, adding at least Philippine authorities were still able to monitor these despite limited resources.

Col. Edgard Arevalo, the Philippine Navy (PN) spokesman on West Philippine Sea issue, earlier said the sighting of the two unidentified aircrafts that were "headed north coming from Southwest direction" occurred Thursday (April 4) around 9:50 a.m.

He said the aircraft were flying at high speed and altitude.

The PN spokesman added that due to limitations on the capabilities of the Philippine military's naval and air assets, the Naval Operating Forced in Palawan were unable to identify the said aircraft.

Guerrero said he is hoping that the ongoing modernization programs of the military will address these needs so that Philippine borders can be protected.

Everything is getting worse, the Chinese poachers are already inside Philippine territories and the latest incident of intrusion report was that they run a ground in "Tubbataha reef!" IMAGINE that you people! :wow:

This is "Matuwid na daan patungong Tsina!??? Filipinos need to wake up!

The actualisation of the AFPM Program is not through press releases and if we are to account all of what was already anounced by the present Govt., "Eh malakas na sana ang AFP" because of their announcement plans, press releases etc., but sad to say, the present haven't really accomplished anything for the Program, nothing that can give solution to our External Intrusion problems except, releasing the Budget (yes, most important) but was also trying to get hold of it (budget) at the same time by cancelling other could have been much quicker more effective plans that can give solution to our current problems, in favor of SK long term soft loans..?? Worse their timing is just great? :dunno: So more delays...
