China armed forces warn Japan against South China Sea patrols
By: Ben Blanchard, Reuters
September 29, 2016 7:22 PM

BEIJING - Japan is "playing with fire" with plans to step up activity in the contested South China Sea through joint training patrols with the United States, China's Defence Ministry said on Thursday, warning it would not sit watching from the sidelines.

China claims virtually the entire South China Sea and has repeatedly denounced what it views as interference there by the United States and its ally, Japan.

Japan is strengthening its ties in the region, in particular with the Philippines and Vietnam, which contest China's claims to parts of the sea, and it aims to help build the capacity of coastal states in the busy waterway, its defense minister said this month during a visit to Washington.

China: Abe's visit to Philippines has 'ulterior motives'
Kyodo News
Posted at Jan 16 2017 09:07 PM

BEIJING - China on Monday voiced displeasure over Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's recent visit to the Philippines, claiming he had "ulterior motives" to play up tensions in the South China Sea.

"The Japanese leader is sparing no effort and seeking whatever means available in sowing discord," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a press briefing, when asked about his trip late last week to the Philippines and Australia.

Hua took issue with Abe raising the South China issue in his talks with the leaders of those two countries, describing it as "not healthy" at all.

I wonder if the plan of granting 6 wetlease F-2s for the PH will be revived in 2020 after the constitutional reforms of Japan. It was a plan sometime 2014/2015 if my memory serves me right
