Japanese Warships in Philippines Near Disputed Waterway
Agence France-Presse 1:32 p.m. EDT April 3, 2016

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT ZONE, Philippines — Two Japanese destroyers and a submarine docked at a Philippine port on Sunday near disputed South China Sea waters, where Beijing’s increasingly assertive behavior has sparked global concern.

Manila is seeking to strengthen ties with Tokyo as tensions mount over the disputed waterway, almost all of which is claimed by China.

Japanese submarine Oyashio and destroyers JS Ariake and JS Setogiri docked in the Subic port Sunday for a routine visit at a sprawling former US naval base just 200 kilometers (125 miles) from a Chinese-held shoal.

Japan, Philippines urge China to respect rule of law

Philippine Star

August 11, 2016

Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr. and Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida urged China to respect the rule of law and maritime security in disputed waters. ...

Kishida is in the country for a three-day visit, from Aug. 10-12, which coincides with the 60 years of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Philippines. ...

"We will be receiving soon from Japan two surveillance seacrafts. This month, in fact, we will be receiving fastcraft from Japan to secure maritime borders and this will also be followed up by two larger, cutter type vessels that will help us in our law enforcement capabilities," Yasay said.
God grant me the courage not to give up what I think is right even though I think it is hopeless.

^I think he meant to say "surveillance aircraft" but you know Yasay. He has a way with words all his own. :lollol:

Interesting series of posts from the blog Submarine Matters. About Chinese plans for their SSBNs and Japan's moves to counter them, allegedly reaching all the way to the South China Sea.

2 surv sea craft could mean the phase 2 mrrvs. If I'm not mistaken they sometimes call some white ships as surv ships. China for instance. I wonder why yasay is calling those like the Chinese???

Japan to boost South China Sea role with training patrols with US
By: Reuters
September 16, 2016 6:30 AM

Japan will step up its activity in the contested South China Sea through joint training patrols with the United States and bilateral and multilateral exercises with regional navies, Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada said on Thursday.

Inada said in a speech at Washington's Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank that Japan's increased engagement in the area, where Japan shares US concerns about China's pursuit of extensive territorial claims, would include capacity building for coastal nations.

Inada, whose country has its own dispute with China over territory in the East China Sea, said that if the world condoned attempts to change the rule of law and allowed “rule bending” to succeed, the "consequences could become global."

I wonder how Japan feels about PH's decision on not to join patrols in the WPS. The Japs are hundreds of miles away from WPS and yet they and the US are doing these patrols for PH. We all know Japan is lead by mature, logical and responsible heads so they are still helping PH with military aid This is aside from the free maritime security joint patrols they are providing which PH should be primarily part of.

Will Japan (and/or the US) ever come to a point when they say "you know what? we can't help those who do not want to help themselves."

The helping hand of Japan being extended to us is brought about also by US policy... As I understand, Pnoy went to the US for support to our WPS-dilemma and I believe US talked to its other allies in the region to help us, most notably Japan, Australia and Korea. Last admin was pursuing a VFA with Japan while completing the same with Australia. The US is mature enough to think that the PH-US relation is well beyond this drug war but they also acknowledge that the current president is showing anti-US policy. They also see that that is not the same with PH-Japan and US will continue to support that PH-Japan alliance by virtue of its commitment to PH-US relations.

China accuses Japan of trying to 'confuse' South China Sea situation
By: Ben Blanchard, Reuters
September 19, 2016 7:38 PM

BEIJING - China on Monday accused Japan of trying to "confuse" the situation in the South China Sea, after its neighbor said it would step up activity in the contested waters, through joint training patrols with the United States.

Ties between Asia's two largest economies have long been overshadowed by arguments over their painful wartime history and a territorial spat in the East China Sea, among other issues.

China has repeatedly denounced what it views as interference by the United States and its ally Japan in the South China Sea.

Japan will also help build the capacity of coastal states in the busy waterway, its defense minister said last week during a visit to Washington.
