Airbus A380?? I am assuming that you are not aware that this thread is about building an airport in KIG or Kalayaan Group of Islands in the Spratlys... Below is a photo of the existing airstrip in Kalayaan island... imagine an A380 landing and taking off from there...

The expansion/improvement of NAIA, the "planned" construction and development of a new international airport by San Miguel Corp. somewhere in Rizal area and the diversion of the foreign flights in DMIA after its planned expansion and development as well, are totally different stories altogether...

Two years after HK tourist massacre, Chinese travelers hail PHL
January 12, 2013 3:48pm

Chinese tourists voted Philippines among the "Best Tourist Destinations" in a survey sponsored by a top daily newspaper in Shanghai City.

In a survey conducted by the "Oriental Morning Post", Philippines won together with Ireland, Finland, Singapore, Korea and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

Consul General Charles C. Jose accepted the award for the country in a ceremony held at a luxury hotel in Shanghai on Jan. 9.

"The award supports consumers' renewed confidence in the Philippines, which remains a popular and sought-after destination among Chinese tourists," according to a statement posted at the Philippine Information Agency website.

From 2011 to 2012, the number of Chinese visitors to the Philippines grew at least 5.36 percent, based on Department of Tourism data.

At least 233,174 tourists from China came to the country from January to November 2012, the data also shows.

Airphil Express, a subsidiary airline of the flag carrier Philippine Airlines, reactivated its Shanghai-Kalibo charters on November 2012, according to a government statement.

Zest Air followed suit on Jan. 10, 2013. Cebu Pacific, on the other hand, launched its maiden chartered flight on January 11.

"Other chartered flights will be opened in time for the Chinese New Year holidays covering several routes: Beijing-Kalibo (Jan. 15), Hangzhou-Kalibo (Jan. 17), Guangzhou-Cebu (January 17), Chengdu-Kalibo (Feb. 5), and Shanghai-Cebu (Feb. 8)," according to the statement.

"By the second and third quarters of 2013 (summer season, and Chinese National Day holiday), chartered flights out of Wenzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Wuhan, Chongqing and Xiamen will also be opened," it also added.

The relationship of the two countries, China and the Philippines went sour in 2012 as both claimed the Panatag Shoal or Scarborough Shoal as part of their territory. -- Shaira F. Panela / KDM, GMA News

I would like to take the opportunity again to suggest Russia's Be-200 platform. They are open for 3rd party avionics and are already collaborating with Italy to provide the avionics and radars for Int'l orders. They just provide the airframe and engines.

The Be-200 fits us very well.

I remember reading a Newsweek article back in the 80s, written by a foreign journalist. It reported that the airstrip has a catapult capable of launching F-8 Crusaders. As a kid back then I tend to regard Newsweek articles as credible.

Can anyone confirm if there really was a catapult installed on the airstrip? Maybe its a good idea to have one and station a few A4 Skyhawks on the island. We can probably purchase military grade A4s from private companies like JDI Holdings in the US. They recently purchased 8 RNZAF A4s for only $7M with all the spare engines, parts and equipment. These jets were upgraded with modern avionics prior to being mothballed.

The catapults was only a plan but did not push through. it was for the F-8 crusaders that were purchased in the late 1970s. if im not mistaken only T-28 tora-tora, BN-2 islander and C-130 could land on Pag-asa island. the T-28 tora-tora due to its loud sound and long range was used for psychological warfare operations to lower the morale of the enemy. At that time, we were the only ones who had warplanes that could reach the spratlys and loiter there.:

at various times, there were also four or more LVTP-5 amphibious vehicles , four or more 40mm bofors, 20mm oerlikons, 50 calibers etc it was also reported that there were 105mm howitzers there. noon ito, mga 1970s to 1980s...madali lang naman ma-reinforce yung pagasa island kasi tayo pinakamalapit pero the AFP needs to make sure na well-maintained ang kanilang C-130s at navy landing crafts. by the way , if you look closely at the white-and blue cylindrical concrete buildings in the spratly islands we occupy, you will notice that they have thick walls(pang-bullet-proof) with small windows which are actually firing ports. :fire: :snipemo: yung mga tinanim na mga trees , when they become big, they will natural obstacles to enemy armor.

Forget the Russian BE aircraft. We should be supporting Mr. Dornier who has a facility at Clark and is building the first real aircraft in the Philippines. His family has experience in building amphibious aircraft that we could use in this endeavor and all the while keeping the money in the Philippines and not going out to some foreign government.

Quoting limited to 2 levels deeprepeatedly talked about this for a year or more and yet nothing is happening should any of us rant "puro salita".

Let's revive this thread after 12 months.
It's already 10 months since then. 2 more months and it will be 1 year already.

So, can we now rant and say that it's all talk !!?? Not even a whimper or proposals or commissioning of a masterplan. Absolutely NOTHING. Not even a whisper.

Gov't to spend P480M to upgrade Navy, Air Force facilities in Spratlys
By Alexis Romero (philstar.com) | Updated December 4, 2013 - 5:57pm

MANILA, Philippines - The government is planning to spend almost P480 million to upgrade the Air Force and Navy facilities in Pag-Asa Island, one of the areas occupied by the Philippines in the disputed Spratlys region.

Defense department data showed that the project costs P479.75 million and would be undertaken through public bidding.

The project will be bankrolled by the Armed Forces Modernization Law of 1995 and is now being studied by security officials.

Details of the project were not immediately available.

Sources, however, said the multi-million project would cover the upgrade of naval facilities and the repair of the eroding airstrip.

The project is expected to improve the military’s monitoring capabilities in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea), the subject of a territorial row in the region.
