Seabed a Hotbed of Controversy for Philippines, China Thomas Maresca, Special for USA TODAY12:51p.m. EST January 21, 2013 http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2013/01/21/philippines-china-sea/1833467/ MASINLOC, Philippines -- Romeo Taneo, 39, has been going to Scarborough Shoal for as long as he can remember. The rich schools of fish such as tuna found along the chain of reefs and rocks 124 miles from shore have been fished by the people of this Philippine town for centuries. But the 2,000 fishermen of Masinloc haven't gone there in months, not since Chinese vessels arrived to claim the shoal for China even though its coastline is 500 miles away. "We can't fish there anymore," Taneo said. "Whenever we go near, the Chinese chase us away." "We're afraid to go to Scarborough now," said Francis Alaras, who has been fishing for 15 years out of Subic Bay. "Even the Coast Guard is afraid to go there." |

The thing is, kung meron talaga tayong enough capabilities na lumaban, matagal na tayo nakipag barilan sa mga intsik, at di lang iyon, kung meron tayong desenteng military capabilities, baka di na tayo na-bully ng mga intsik. Oh well, we learned our lesson. Tapos. Yan yung sinasabi nila, give it up or we die for it! Bahala na ang mundo! Basta ipaglaban lang ang ating teritoryo kahit wala tayong kabilidad. |

After the Sate of Israel was formed, how did they manage to defend themselves against a cohort of Arab nations attacking them the next day and won the war? Let's take that as a lesson of going to war without long preparation time or no preparation at all. They made it because they were united. I doubt if our fellow Filipinos will have the same trait as the Israelis. Hence the wait and see mode. Edited by Samir_Duran, Jan 22 2013, 10:10 AM.

Whether you think it is pointless or not... It has to be raised. A formal complaint has to be made to the UNCLOS in order for them to act on it. The big issue here is why haven't they done so after 7 months? Most of us hate the "paper work", the formalities. Much like when a member of your family dies, why does one need a physician to confirm and sign a certificate of death when obviously the person is dead? It pisses us off. Unfortunately, that is what happens in real life. Such is also true for the UNCLOS. BTW. China is a signatory to the UNCLOS. Be that said, I think it is safe to say that they recognize it. It's following the rules and their word of honour which is in doubt here. Edited by Hong Nam, Jan 22 2013, 01:08 PM.

Relevant provisions of the philippine constitution relating to our national territory/sovereignty that every Filipino citizen's duty is to uphold: Preamble We, the sovereign Filipino people, imploring the aid of Almighty God, in order to build a just and humane society and establish a Government that shall embody our ideals and aspirations, promote the common good, conserve and develop our patrimony, and secure to ourselves and our posterity the blessings of independence and democracy under the rule of law and a regime of truth, justice, freedom, love, equality, and peace, do ordain and promulgate this Constitution. the only problem to the u.n. is the security council hierarchy of the un correct me if I'm wrong 1st general assembly - for formalities only 2nd security counsel - somewhat the real figure head 3rd unesco unicef and so forth 99 percent of the u.n. might agree with us heck even the tribunal with agree with us but whose gonna enforce it? china being a security council member will always veto any actions against it either economically or militarily. ... hugo chaves is right.... well with only this phrase, the u.n. must be reorganized so each and every country would stand on equal footing and will not be at the mercy of the five permanent members of the security counsel. it takes for them time to act due to the back door diplomacy like in the case of libya and now syria(and the genocide in rwanda heck they cant even agree with the meaning of genocide) voice of the majority. |

I admire the nationalism, although misplaced. Good God! Do you both know who you guys sound like? Human history is full of people with the same ideas. - We don't need more of those kind. Didn't I read once that the Philippines is a melting pot of various cultures and races? Where is it said that Filipinos of Chinese lineage aren't Filipinos? What is a Filipino then? Need not expand more on that. I sure you've both grasped the idea already. |
