MANILA, Philippines – A special investigator of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) was shot dead by a security guard inside the NBI headquarters in Manila before dawn Thursday.

NBI Special Investigator III Honorado Ocampo died after he was shot by security guard Oscar Cabebe Sapatero at around 2 a.m.

Initial reports said Ocampo was accompanying a detainee when he and Sapatero had an altercation that led to a shootout.

Ocampo was shot in the chest. The bullet pierced through his side. He succumbed to his wounds at the Philippine General Hospital shortly before 3 a.m.

Sapatero, meanwhile, was shot in the foot and was sent to Medical Center Manila for treatment.

NBI personnel prevented members of the Manila Police District (MPD) Homicide Section and Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) from entering the NBI headquarters.

"According doon sa sentinel ng NBI compound, naghihintay pa raw sila ng clearance sa pamunuan nila. Iniimbestigahan na raw ito ng NBI-NCR," MPD Homicide Section chief Senior Inspector Joselito de Ocampo told dzMM.

"As a matter of policy, ang homicide investigator ang dapat magimbestiga dahil obstruction of justice na itong ginagwa nila. Hindi natin malaman kung may itinatago sila and gusto nating makita yung crime scene para ma-assess natin kung ano ang nangyari at ang witnesses na posibleng nakakita noong insidente," he added.

Police investigators already left the NBI headquarters after failing to conduct their investigation at the crime scene. – reports from Noel Alamar and Zhander Cayabyab, dzMM
