Arnulfo Burgos, hepe ng Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Public Affairs Office.

MANILA, Philippines -- There is absolutely no doubt in the mind of retired Marine Master Sergeant Rodolfo Aviles that, should his son Alfonso be called on to risk his life for others again, he will not hesitate to do so.

Rodolfo was with his son when the senior Philippine Military Academy cadet, who was shot while trying to prevent a jeepney robbery in Quezon City on August 25, was first presented to media at the Armed Forces of the Philippines Medical Center on Wednesday.

PMA superintendent, Major General Nonato Peralta, who described the younger Aviles’ recover as “miraculous,” awarded him the Bronze Cross, the fourth highest military honor.

The cadet was also given another class ring to replace the one taken from him by the robber who shot him twice and sent him into a coma.

After almost two months of intensive care, Cadet Aviles has woken from the coma and can now walk with some assistance and speak in short phrases, although his doctors say he still needs facial reconstruction surgery and thrice weekly physical rehabilitation sessions.

The retired Marine said when his son awoke from the coma, he could not remember what had happened to him.

“Tinatanong niya kung ano ang nangyari (He was asking what had happened),” he said.

Captain Medardo Millares, one of Cadet Aviles’ attending doctors, said he is also is suffering from post-traumatic amnesia but his long- and short-term memory are intact.

“This is usual for patients who undergo traumatic incidents,” Millares said.

The cadet’s doctors have high hopes for his complete recovery.

Should his son ask to return to military service, the elder Aviles said he would not refuse.

“Papayagan ko siya (I will let him). Wala siyang bisyo (my son is good, I took care of him since he was small. He has no vices),” he told reporters.

Facing the media, a smiling Cadet Aviles said: “Thank you sa lahat ng nagdasal para sa akin (to everyone who prayed for me).”

“Magdasal po tayo na gumaling siya agad (Let us pray that he recovers soon),” his father added.

Peralta said what Cadet Aviles did exemplified the teachings of the PMA.

This is not what youth normall do but Cadet Aviles proved courage and strength of character to stop crime),” Peralta said. “Sana maabot niya ang dati niyang lakas (May he recover all his strength) so that he can again protect the people.”

The robber who shot the cadet remains at large and the PMA is coordinating with police to hunt him down.
