CAAP: Plane with DILG Secretary on board crashes off Masbate August 18, 2012 6:24pm 3083 348 0 4296 A private plane carrying Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo crashed off Masbate province Saturday afternoon, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines said. CAAP head William Hotchkiss said at least one person had been rescued from the area, but there were no immediate reports of casualties. "May report na may eroplano nag-takeoff from Mactan to Naga, nag-report ng emergency malapit sa Masbate," Hotchkiss said in an interview on dzBB radio. He said the CAAP alerted the local airport manager and local Coast Guard on the incident. Meanwhile, Lt. Col. Julian Pacatan, commander of Army forces in Masbate, identified the survivor as Robredo’s aide, Jun Abrazado. Abrazado, who is in critical condition, told the army officer that Robredo was not able to get out of the plane. While Hotchkiss declined to name the official aboard the plane, a report by dzBB's Manny Vargas confirmed Robredo was aboard the plane. A separate report by dzBB's Tuesday Niu quoted presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda as confirming Robredo was aboard the flight. For its part, the DILG said on its Twitter account that Robredo was on board a Cessna 172 plane. "Pilot sent a distress call to Masbate Airport at about 5 p.m. requesting for an emergency landing," it said. "The plane did not make it to the airport and crashed 3 km from the airport in Masbate Bay," the DILG added. The report said Robredo was aboard the plane with an aide, and was on his way to Naga City after attending a political meeting. Citing initial reports, Hotchkiss said the plane that crashed was a company plane that took off from Mactan International Airport in Cebu at 3 p.m. "Sa dagat ito nag-crash (It crashed in the sea)," he said. — with reports from Ana Mae Lamentillo/LBG/DVM, GMA News http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/270304/news/nation/caap-plane-with-dilg-secretary-on-board-crashes-off-masbate |

The survivor is his aide. He has a broken arm, and yet he still proceeded to search for Sec. Robredo. It would be hard, since it happened at night, and that aircraft is very small. |

2 deepwater maritime search-capable US planes to help in Robredo search http://www.interaksyon.com/article/40847/2-deepwater-maritime-search-capable-us-planes-to-help-in-robredo-search MANILA, Philippines - (UPDATE, 11:46 a.m.) The United States has committed to send two US planes with deepwater maritime search capabilities in the search for Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo, it was learned Sunday. At the same time, four ships of the Philippine Navy are now taking part in the ongoing search-and-rescue operations for Robredo and two civilian pilots who went missing after their plane went down the waters off Masbate Saturday afternoon. These are BRP Hilario Ruiz (PG-378), BRP Simeon Castro (PG-374), BRP Carlos Albert (PG-375), and DF-339. One Islander aircraft is also supporting the search operations of the ships together with two diving teams with deep sea equipment. The US government responded to the Philippines’ call for help and said that “as of 10:15 p.m. (Saturday), an airplane with Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) capability is expected to arrive over the site in two hours while the second airplane will come from Japan and will take five hours to reach the site.” IFR capability refers to aircraft types that can handle deepwater maritime search and rescue operations in difficult weather conditions, the DILG said in a news release. This details the earlier statement of Transportation and Communication Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas II, who said the United States Geological Survey (USGS) team will help in the search for missing Robredo, pilot Capt. Jessup Bahinting, and student pilot Kshitiz Chand, a Nepalese. "(As of 9 p.m., we) received and accepted an offer of help via US Naval Attache Capt. Jack Sutherland; the USG [USGS] has a Fleet Survey team," he said on his Twitter account. Roxas said the USGS team is now heading toward the crash site. |
