MILF slams Zamboanga city mayor
By John Unson Home Updated July 02, 2012 02:41 PM

COTABATO CITY, Philippines – The Moro Islamic Liberation Front slammed Zamboanga City Mayor Celso Lobregat for his continuing opposition to the establishment of an office of the Malaysian-led International Monitoring Team in his turf.

Members of the IMT, which is comprised of soldiers and police officers from Malaysia, Brunei and Libya, and civilian conflict resolution and rehabilitation experts from Norway, Japan and the European Union, are holding office at the camp of the Western Mindanao Command in Calarian district in Zamboanga City since 2004.

IMT members assigned in Zamboanga City monitor the implementation of the government-MILF 1997 Agreement on General Cessation of Hostilities in the island provinces Basilan and Sulu, and parts of the Zamboanga peninsula.

The MILF’s website, www.luwaran.net, said members of the government’s peace panel have tried, but failed to convince Lobregat to allow the setting up of an IMT office anywhere in Zamboanga City, outside of the Westmincom headquarters.

The office outside the military camp is expected to prevent speculations of IMT's impartiality.

“We cannot understand why the Aquino administration cannot compel Lobregat, a mere mayor, to toe the government line and agree to relocate the IMT sub-office outside of the camp,” the MILF’s news website quoted an unidentified rebel leader based in Zamboanga City as saying.

The supposed creation of an IMT operations office outside of Westmincom’s premises is a bilateral effort of the government and MILF peace panels.

The IMT core earlier suggested to both panels the establishment of an office in Ipil, capitol town of Zamboanga-Sibugay owing to the area’s proximity to the cities of Zamboanga and Pagadian.

The governor of Zamboanga-Sibugay, Rommel Jalosjos, however, also opposed the plan.
