MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – At least 11 people died after an armed clash between government soldiers and suspectd members of terrorist group Abu Sayyaf broke out in Sumisip, Basilan on Thursday, an official said.

Major General Ricardo Rainier Cruz, commander of the Philippine Army’s 1st Infantry Division, said the clash occurred at around 7:30 a.m. in Barangay Upper Cabengbeng and left 7 soldiers and 4 Abu Sayyaf terrorists dead.

At least 3 were reported injured from the government side and 2 from the Abu Sayyaf.

Cruz said the firefight between the two sides was still ongoing, as of posting.

that'a a lot of casualties from the soldier's side... what could have been wrong? do the troops have complete body protection? were they hit by IEDs or RPGs?

All i can do is vocally demand a better attack helicopter for you guys.
Modernization should prioritize:

Patrol Ships with air/sub/ship detection, fast & lightly armed for Navy.
Surface Attack Aircraft with anti ship/sub attack capability for Airforce.
SAM with Radars, Close AA battery capable of shooting ground targets too for Army.
This triangle defense will work together and protect us from external threats.

As per report, artillery shells were also fired causing the bandits to take cover and scatter... 2 attack helis and 2 hueys were also deployed to support the troops...
