The Stuff I Don't Like

Looking back as a mother, I think I can pinpoint the moment I knew what kind of a son I had. I'd opened a can of vegetable soup for a quick lunch for the two of us. He, with the firmness of a seven-year-old, expressed his dislike of vegetable soup. And I, with the annoyance of a parent, answered, "Well, if you're going to criticize the food the Lord's given us, then you can just ask His blessing on it!"

The dark, lash-rimmed eyes closed, and the curly head bowed. "Dear God, I thank You even for the stuff I don't like. Amen."

Then without sourness or scowls or screams, he ate vegetable soup—in sweet submission.

That was 20 years ago. And during the interim 20 years he's treated all his distasteful tasks, experiences, and defeats the same way he did that bowl of vegetable soup; he takes whatever faces him. Without gripes. Or complaints.

Whether or not he audibly says, Dear God, I thank You even for the stuff I don't like. Amen. For life's unpleasantries, this is still his attitude.

I confess it has not often enough been mine. Which is probably the reason he is now the pastor of a congregation of believers. And I'm merely one of the many members in it. —Isabel Champ
