What a brilliant film.
I picked this DVD up in the sales and it is one of the best films I have seen in a long time.
Directed by Edward Zwick.
This movie was excellent.
Tom Cruise plays the role of Nathan Algren who is an American military advisor who is hired by The Japanese to modernize their army so they can force out the Samurai warriors and become modern.
Captured by The samurai during battle he is spared his life and taken to a village where he is nursed back to health.
As his time with the Samurai people goes on he starts to embrace their life and realize that he has done wrong.
I really liked the way everything was done in this movie. From the settings right through to things like costume design and the period of when these events happened.
It is one of those films that makes you see life by the way it portrays the Japanese peoples ability to even show their enemy respect.
The Samurai respected and honored their enemy and in the end they faught for what they believed in. Their right to live as they were.
Scenes that got to me the most was one where a Japanese soldier cut off a Samurais topknot. I could feel myself start to choke up at that time. It was the highest shame and dishoner that could be put on a Samarai.
Anyway as a fan of all things japanese, esp the old traditions I loved this movie. It went beyond a movie,it was a lesson,a movement,a time to reflect.
I give this movie a highly recommendable 9 out of 10.

I am not a movie reviewer and the opinions pointed out here are my own.
Thanks
Jodie

I loved this movie as well. It was on HBO on demand a while back... one day I ordered it while I was doing laundry. I didn't expect to like it... but I ended up sitting through the whole thing completely neglecting my laundry.

I also highly recommend.
