Yeh, sometimes when stories are turned into musicals, they become cheesey and a bit lame. Have you seen South Pacific? That was originally based on the life of Pushkin's eponymous hero, Onegin. "There is nothing like a Dame" explores the exploits of an aristocratic dandy who becomes bored with the amorous intrigues of St. Petersburg society... and "Happy, Happy, Happy, Happy Talk" is an ode to Byron. I think Rogers and Hammerstein dealt with the material wonderfully well! |
