Yeh, sometimes when stories are turned into musicals, they become cheesey and a bit lame.

Have you seen South Pacific? That was originally based on the life of Pushkin's eponymous hero, Onegin. "There is nothing like a Dame" explores the exploits of an aristocratic dandy who becomes bored with the amorous intrigues of St. Petersburg society... and "Happy, Happy, Happy, Happy Talk" is an ode to Byron.

I think Rogers and Hammerstein dealt with the material wonderfully well!
For me though, it's like I've given birth to my own baby girl. You know? Only she's, like, a big giant girl who smokes and says "shit" a lot.
